Hi All

I'm due to take my test next month and will be buying a small car as I believe that they will be much cheaper to insure.

I've been on several comparison website and used a ford fiesta as a model to generate a quote. I have to say that I am absolutely horrified by the prices I have been quoted bearing in mind that I am 42 year old lady driver...

Last year I ran the same quote on the same websites and was quoted £368 for third party fire and theft. I put in the same information just one year later to find that it is now cheaper for me to get fully comp insurance at around £1350 per year than third party which works out at £1800+. How can that be right??!

Any advice on good quality cheap insurers and which would be the cheapest cars to insure for a first timer?

When you do find a cheap quote on one of those comparison sites it's worth going directly to the website of the cheapest insurer you find as it will 'cut the middle man out' and be cheaper again.
I have trade insurance so unfortunately cannot help anymore on this.
Good luck smile

Insurance has rocket in recent months due to the suing society we currently live in. People are purposely buying cheap cars, causing crashes and getting whiplash claims.

FYI, the price comparison sites are not a 'middle man' they make their money on click throughs. so they will generally only make a pound or 2 per person.

Some insurance companies used to give you 40% no-claims on your first 6 months insurance. So while you pay slightly over the top for the 6 months, the subsequent insurances are considerably cheaper.

You'd have to ask.

Ste is absolutely right, i have just insured my van, on these compare websites it would have cost me £120 more with same company.

It's no wonder there are so many uninsured muppets driving around out there!
I have plenty of time to research insurance... so I guess I'll just keep plugging away till I find something affordable..

I think you have explained why in your first sentence, your due to take your test next month, you will get hammered for the first few years, you will be classed as a new driver ,kerching goes the till,it will drop, but it's going to hurt until you have time and no claims on your side, been through this when son decided he wanted to drive instead of cycle. verysorry

PS good luck anyway

like yourself i m an older driver, and female i have found that going fully comp is not that much different than 3rd party fire and theft.you get better benfits if anything happens to your car. Try l.v , i would ask when you apply to a company why is it so high ,it will go down a bit after 1 year. good luck with your test and finding a good insurance quote.

give tesco a try. also select the highest level of breakdown cover as this can reduce the price.

also if you have a partner get a quote with them on it.

Good luck with your test next month. We all started paying high insurance at first, then over the years they came down. There are number of ways to bring the cost down.
1. Take the pass plus after passing your test as many insurance company take this in account.
2. I have heard of a company that fits a box to your car, so they know when the car is used on the road. and park in a garage or off road at night.
3. Get your insurance at the end of the month as if they have not hit their target, they may give you more discount
4. Shop and shop around, discounts are important but it is what you are going to pay at the end that counts
5. Finally drive careful and get your no claims discounts

3. one company I heard of can fit a box to your car so you only pay when it is used
