Does anyone remember the shop in Grange Road (bit up from were Boots is now-on the same side). It came up in a conversation the other night. It seemed to sell all kinds of things (Homeware, toys, etc).It had either steps or an esculator that went down into the basement.Somebody said Grand Fare but I cant remember now.It was there in the late 70s early 80s.I remember it used to have round security cameras in the ceiling.
I think I know which one you mean - there was a basement, and a top floor (which sold bedding and things). I remember those camera's vividly! I'll ask my mum what it was called.
it was T J Hughes and when they moved to the precinct it became Grandfare.I used to get my ciggies from there. I remember the cameras when it was TJs and there was no ground floor, only a basement and upstairs.
Remember it as TJ's before they moved to where they are now.
When it was Grandfare, there was also a butty bar built into the entrance, must of been 1986 when I was on a YTS, used to go there regularly ... as I had a bit of a thing for the girl that made the butties.
The shop was built in 1959 for Owen Owen, the drawing below is from the opening advert (they probably used a drawing because the building wasn't complete when the advert was prepared).
T.J.Hughes was, at this time, owned by Owen Owen and at some time in the 1960s it was re-branded as a T.J.Hughes store (this was sometime before 1968).
The shop closed when the precinct opened in 1975 and after this the building had several occupiers on short term leases. until it was demolished.
If we are talking about t j hughes (where Iceland is now) In the 60s Owen Owen used to be there sorry pic not too clear from 1960's something street directory 1916 there was a chapel there
