On a sunny afternoon of Wednesday 10th June 1908 Four year old HENRY WILSON was playing with his younger sister ESTHER in victoria park Tranmere the two children were running about gleefully enjoying the fresh air and sunshine yet this happy scene was soon to change,The two children made there way to ALBANY ROAD at the far side of the park fenced in the corner of the field was a dull gloomy clay pit pool,It was 5ft deep and the water rather murky continuing their fun young ESTHER decided to crawl under the fence and made her way to the pool were there was a large plank of wood floating on the surface like a toy raft,To her horror the raft overturned plunging her in to the deep water, Her brother HENRY himself only small waded into the pool in a desperate attempt to rescue HESTHER he got in as far as his neck and tryed to reach out to his sister but was to far away HENRY then climbed aboad the raft and screaming for help when ARCHIBALD CULLEN of 27 meadow lane and CHARLES WITHAM of 10 wye street wasted no time by stripping down and jumping to save the young girl the water was opaque it seemed the girl would never been found However MR CULLEN rescued the girl she was facinf face up around 5 yds away from the edge of the pool he ducked under and pulled her out PC GRIFFITHS was beckoned as he neared he scence and try to resuscitate the young girl unfortunately with no avail.A horse ambulance was called which took esther to the young childrens hospital on woodchurch road Ther DR BERRY the local medical officer pronounced her life to be extinct,
The action of the young boy was remarkable and was a wonderful exhibition of courage and prescence of mind,it was unfortunate that the young boys efforts to save is sister was unsuccesful
The coroner returned the virdect of accidental drowing.
