CAN ANY ONE HELP ME WITH ANY INFORMATION ON THE WIRRAL TURNPIKE THAT WAS INSTIGATED IN 1787 ESPECIALLY PRIMARY SOURCES IE MAPS/PHOTOS/DRAWINGS/ACCOUNTS ETC
Hi maca1 - welcome to Wikiwirral. Can you be more specific - you already have a date, which route are you enquiring about? Tell us what you already have. I believe that 'Chester to Eastham' and 'Chester to Parkgate' turnpikes are both recorded as opened in 1787. Can't give primary source though, just my notes from a lecture I attended.
Here is some info taken from "The Evolution and Development of the Turnpike Road in Cheshire" by K.W.L. Starkie (published in Cheshire History number 39 1999-2000).
Very interesting. Do you think that the 3 short diagonals off the main road at Birkenhead are the roads to the ferries? Looks as if the might be to New Ferry, Rock Ferry & Tranmere Ferry.
