Liverpool have reached an agreement to sell midfielder Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid, subject to a medical.
The fee for the Spanish international is reported to be in the region of £30m but Liverpool said the terms of the deal would remain confidential.
The 27-year-old joined Liverpool from Real Sociedad in August 2004.
A statement on Real's website confirmed the news and added that Alonso will arrive in Madrid on Wednesday "to undergo the required medical".
If the deal goes through Alonso will become the second Liverpool player to join the Spanish giants after full-back Alvaro Arbeloa's switch to the Bernabeu last week. Best passer of the ball in Europe imho. Will be sorely missed within the team. Hopefully though, we can at least keep ahold of Masch. Benitez is said to have already had £40million to spend, surely now he has "got" to look at the possibility of bringing in David Villa to give us options and backup up front, and of course we are going to need a new CM - not an easy, or cheap task to replace Alonso. Direct replacement is impossible, I hope Benitez has something under his sleeves. Still, it could fall through, here's hoping!! He's been a great servant to the club over the past 5 years however, and I don't think I could deny him the chance to live out a dream, and wish him all the success in the future if he does move. I just hope he does not become a bit-part player at Real what with all the other superstars they have there. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/l/liverpool/8184444.stm

Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso has completed his £30m transfer to big-spending Real Madrid from Liverpool after passing a medical on Wednesday.
The Reds revealed on Tuesday a deal had been struck but added the terms would remain confidential.
Alonso, 27, joined Liverpool from Real Sociedad in August 2004 for £10.5m.
Technical director Jorge Valdano said the capture of Alonso would signal the end of Real Madrid's buying spree which has now seen them spend over £200m.
"With this signing, the chapter is now closed on transfers," said Valdano. Gutted. Good luck Xabi, and thanks for everything! Great player. Can't help but feel Benitez caused his desire to move when he tried to force him to give up the chance of being at the birth of his child to play Inter. As Xabi said at the time, nothing is more important than family, and sometimes it is all to easy to lose sight of that in football. BBC Sport
