Schools on red alert for murder suspect

SCHOOLS in Falmouth and Penryn have been put on alert after the prime suspect in a murder inquiry is thought to have headed to the area.

Police have warned the public not to approach Gary Finlay (pictured right), who is wanted in connection with the death of a man in Merseyside and has been described as "dangerous".

Finlay, 46, is understood to have personal links with Falmouth and to a school in the area.

Police have visited all primary and secondary schools in the two towns to give advice.

The headteacher of one primary school said: "The school has complied with the police request to be vigilant, but to manage the situation sensibly to avoid unhelpful hysteria within the community.
"All members of staff have been fully briefed and we have an action plan in place."

The presence of an armed response unit in Acacia Road, Falmouth, last Tuesday is believed to be related to the search for Finlay.

Merseyside Police are heading the investigation into the death of Graham McKenna, who died on January 10 in Claughton.

Following the violent stabbing, Mr McKenna's 14-year-old son was also attacked.

This week a fresh appeal for information has been made, including Finlay's face being featured in BBC Crimewatch's 'most wanted' list on Tuesday night.

Merseyside officers are liaising with Devon and Cornwall Police as they think he may be in the South West.

"Members of the public are advised not to approach Mr Finlay as he is considered to be dangerous," said Superintendent Jon Ward, Merseyside police chief.

Detective Sergeant Ian Pengelly, of Truro CID, said: "We have had no positive sightings of him at all.

"We have done everything we possibly can do to ascertain if he is here, but none of the sightings have been confirmed as being him. There's nothing to say he is here at the moment, but there is nothing to say he is not."

Finlay is described as five feet eight inches tall and of medium build. He walks with a limp and was last seen wearing a black and dark grey padded jacket.

Anyone who does see him is asked to contact their local police station on 08452 777444.
