Hi...
more help required I'm afraid.
I seem to be pestering for information pretty frequently lately...sorry!
its all based on trying to figure out my rather loose and expansive family history, (based mainly around the borough road area from 1843 to 1970)
It seems like everything I find out leads to multiple further questions.

anyway.
I will try and get all the questions out there at once..
Firstly...
Atherton steet?.... which I am told is now lost and considered part of Exmouth street, can anyone confirm its location...
I think it was there in the 50's as I have some photos, with the "Claughton? theatre ? / music hall ?" in the background.

Secondly... does anyone have a decent early map (electronic copy) of the area of Borough Road from Whetstone lane to where Prenton park is now.

thirdly and finally ( for now at least )
I am aware that a significant amount of birkenhead history is available at the Cheshire Lines building now, but the question is?, is it possible to view birth /marriage/ death certificates directly, or do you have to pay upfront for copies. My worry here is for a large family, where a lot of the info I have is, to say the least a bit sketchy, I could end up coughing up for a lot of stuff which isnt actually relevant.

thanks in advance

Phill

sorry sorry....
another quick one
I am guessing that someone on here has a ful set of the Boumphrey books...."yesterdays wirral"
I have seen in one years ago,a picture of charing cross with a guy wheeling a handcart in the foreground.
the question is.. which edition was it...
the reason.... the man with the handcart is my grandad, and a few years ago my dad restored the handcart and gave it to my cousin, who still has it.
i know you can still pick up these books on ebay and suchlike, but wanted to start with that one specifically.

Hi; I'll try to answer some of your questions.
Yes, Atherton St. ran from Charing Cross to Claughton Rd. See map Charing Cross. This is dated 1936.

Here's a map of the bit of Borough Rd. you asked for. This is from the Godfrey edition, 1909. Note that it shows the football ground on its previous site on the other side of Prenton Rd. West.

I think the BMD records may still be with the registrar in Hamilton Square, but I'm not sure. A phone call to the registrar would answer this.

I haven't got the complete Yesterday's Wirral set, but looking at the catalogue, it would probably be in No.2 or No.7 since those are the ones covering Birkenhead, the difference being that No.7 includes Bidston & Upton.
Why not contact Ian Boumphrey direct; he may know. His website is
www.yesterdayswirral.co.uk.
If you want to browse for it yourself, the garden centre at Port Sunlight seems to keep most of them; I expect the archives have them too.
Cheers, Chris.

BMD can all be viewed for free at Liverpool central library but not sure if they have the same at Birkenhead. It is a long drawn out process so you have to be patient. All on microfiche.

If you finally sort out who is yours etc then you can order certificates at seven quid a go but not before.

Free Cheshire BMD is available on line but not a complete record. http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/

Fairfax Road, Seacombe the only Wirral Fairfax Road is in Tranmere, no other in Gore's 1900 street list, tried 1913 map, couldn't find it - BUT wirral council has it in the catchment area for Kingsway Primary School.

Where did you get the address from, have you got a surname or business name that could be used for other directories?

Just searched for Fairfax Cheshire on 1911 census - all results are Tranmere, Birkenhead. Are you sure you are reading it right?

dont have the original yet, but the transcript clearly states...
address:
33 fairfax road , seacombe, wallasey, cheshire
enumeration district: 46..
parish: Poulton cum Seacombe.

however, I am beginning to think this is doubtful... as there is nothing in any of the directories except the Fairfax road in Tranmere.

will have to wait and see the original census form I think.

cheers
I am guessing that it probably existed in 1909, but was a fairly recent addition and that the 1909 map missed it for this reason...
I had already looked at maps mainly around the 1900-1910 dates, based on the census data which said no 33 was occupied by my great grandparents in 1911.
I am really grateful for firstly, the fluke that brought you to find it, and secondly for solving a puzzle that has been bugging me increasingly for the last few days...
