Police throw "ring of steel" around Wirral By Leigh Marles Police threw a "ring of steel" around Wirral last night in a major crackdown against drugs, guns and car crime.
The operation was the biggest of its kind in the region, and saw more than 250 officers mobilised, stopping hundreds of motorists and rail commuters.
Police said the aim was to prevent the transport of drugs and weapons. Checkpoints were set up at most major routes, including the M53, the A41, Laird Street, Borough Road, both Mersey tunnels and the bus and rail network.
In all, 39 arrests have been made.
The borough's police chief, Supt Colin Matthews, said: "We are sending a message that Wirral is closed to criminals."
Oficers from the Ministry of Defence provided the operation with sniffer dogs to search for drugs and weapons.

Lol ya gotta love the statements they make like "Wirral is closed to criminals". But to be honest, the police do a stirling job as it is, especially given the lack of resources they have, and they take far too much flak for the crime in this country. The problem with crime has very little to do with the police, its the countries pathetic legal and justice system. The government need to sort that out before any of these initiatives will have any real effect.

Well the way I see it the police are a joke and our goverment is the laughing stock of the world. Its the lack of parental discipline that has left the last few generations completely indifferent to whether or notthey offend other people. We now live in a society where the majority appear to feel that they need only think of what they want regardless of the enormouse distress it might cause others. This current degradation to the way crime in this country began as a backlash to authoritarian world after WWII.One can only hope that there will also be a backlash to this libertarian approach and that the pendulum will settle somewhere in the middle where there is a little common decency and everyone's rights are consiered.

I partially agree with you that lack of parental disipline is the cause of an increase in crime rates. This current degradation to the way crime in this country began as a backlash to authoritarian world after WWII.One can only hope that there will also be a backlash to this libertarian approach and that the pendulum will settle somewhere in the middle where there is a little common decency and everyone's rights are consiered. I disagree with your reasons however. I believe the current degradation to the way of crime is due to indifferences between citizens and their social classes. Abolish poverty, and people will have no reasons to turn to crime. If the status of living is improved, parents can better disipline and eventually, generations will be nurtured into a lower crime and overall better off society.

You are boardering on communist beliefs there Joe.
In my opinion, the biggest reason there is so much crime has nothing to do with social deprevation and the like, it is simply because this countries justic system is an absolute joke and druggies are given far too much lenience and in many ways supported by the government.
I know of bag heads who have been on methadone for 10 years+ and still continue to use street heroin on a daily basis. They can't even be done if they are caught in possesion of heroin cos their registered bag heads. If the authorities cant work out that after 10 years of treatment, they are still on it, it means they are never going to come off and they should stop wasting tens of thousands per year to feed them methadone, then I really don't know how they expect to be able to control the country.
Bag heads and criminals should be given prison sentences on an island where they can be placed in detention sentences and never be allowed to leave unless they behave themselves. They should not be given any luxuries whatsoever whilst inside, and they should be fed on basic rations and have basic cells. Maybe a radio station for the Island, but thats as far as it should go.
They should be under army regulations and the island should be patrolled by army troops only.
I dont give a shit what the do gooder human rights nobs want to say about it all, they can fook off, why should we all lose our human rights to be able to leave our homes and cars without worrying whether a bag head is going to rob them, why should we lose our human rights to be able to walk down a street because a gang of ASBO certified nobs are intimidating everyone who dares to walk past, why should have our cars and gardens vandelised.
In my opinion, prisoners should have NO human rights whatsoever. At the end of the day, they are not prisoners of war (who I strongly agree, should have human rights), they have gone to prison through nothing but choice, they have committed a crime, nobody has forced them to do it. They wouldnt have lost their human rights if it hadnt have been for this.
Yeah of course people do wrong, and there should a certain amount of lenience, maybe the first one or two "smaller" crimes should have a custodial sentence in a normal prison, but it would seriously cut crime if they knew after committing 3 crimes or one serious crime, they would be facing a VERY long time in a prison with nothing but a strict army routine and NO priveledges, I guarantee you that crime would be cut dramatically overnight.

You're idea probably would work, you're right. But you can't have people living in fear of the government. Yes, if they commit a crime, they should be fully liable for it and thus face whatever consequences. If you treat citizens with conservative ideas as such, you will end up with a stratocracy. And Matty, perhaps I have somewhat communist beleifs because I'm socialist

But you can't have people living in fear of the government. Thats communism lol. Seriously though, I see what you mean, but something deffo needs to be done about all these scally wags, and shilst it may be somewhat in fear of the government, we can look at it as they would have nothing to fear if they dont do the crime. Its just a total zero tolerance strategy. You live within the law and you can live quite happily. You decide to break the law and you can start worrying about losing all your rights. As I say though, there has to be some headroom for smaller crimes, where custodial sentences could be served in a normal prison, but once a repeat offender or a major crime is committed, then the line is drawn. And theres no reason why they should pay back what they owe to society by being made to work for the country whilst inside.
