CAR THEFT 'CLONING' WARNING
THOUSANDS of stolen DVLA logbooks are being used by thieves to sell cars they have swiped.
They are filling in the forms with details from legitimate vehicles they see on the streets.
They then "clone" the car by stealing a matching model and altering its number plates to those on the forged document.
As many as 23,000 dodgy V5C logbooks are thought to be doing the rounds.
Motor trade expert Chris Andrews, of London's ANG Services, warned: "Thieves would probably pay up to £200 for a blank registration document because it could mean getting market value for a stolen car."
Vehicles with such false papers risks will be confiscated by police.
The DVLA said: "Motorists looking to buy a car are urged to check the serial number at the top right hand corner of the registration certificate.
"If it falls within the range BG 9167501 to BG 9190500, they are advised not to purchase it."
