you been to the Archives for info on the house?

Personally, I havent, I am sure my friends father/mother has. It is a fantastic house, but remeber as a kid I never slept due to his older sister telling us ghost stories!!

I know behind the cellar door in the hall is a large hook, been told this was used for lowering the coffins into the cellar/morgue.

My friends father showed me the entrance to the tunnel, it is blocked off approx 5 to 10 feet, shame. Would love to reopen it. Shame I am an arachnophobe oshocked

would be intrestring tho smile

Recommend you or your mate visit Earlston Library reference dept. They have a large selection of old maps there which may give you some vital clues as to the house and its history. See how far back you can trace it just using maps. I know it's supposed to be very old, but can you find it on the first Wallasey Tithe Map (mid 19th Century)? Who owned it then? And what else was around it? Was the property called something different than "Granthorpe" or "The Limes"?

If they have any books on the Cottage Hospital, it will probably include info on your friend's house as well. I believe that when the Cottage Hospital was originally located in St.George's Road (Back Lane) it was in a building called Byron Lodge. The Cottage Hospital moved to premises in Claremount Road in 1885. So think this was before the main phase of fighting in the Boer war got properly going.

Yes, it was called Byron Lodge. Found this entry in the “Handy Book of Cottage Hospitals” (snappy title!) published 1870:

Wallasey Cottage Hospital, Opened March Ist, 1866. Five Beds.

This is a cottage rented for the purpose, attended by an elected medical officer, and not open to other medical men; 80 patients have been received since its commencement. The patients' payments range from 2s. 6d. to 5s. a week.

There are also a couple of references in Thomas Westcott’s “Landmarks of Old Wallasey Village, 1859” when writing about Back Lane (now St. George’s Road):

‘…the larger house, the front of which faced Folly Gutter, was occupied by the owner Daniel Robinson. Some years afterwards this house was altered and became the first Cottage Hospital.

Now we come to the entrance to the Limes, a house facing the Broadfield in which lived Mr Muller. This gentleman used to fly a large eagle kite for the amusement of his two sons, but we lads used to join in the amusement when he brought down the kite…’
