Would be glad of any info on the location of Byrom Street, Birkenhead in late 19th / early 20th centuries, if anyone can help please ? I can't seem to locate it despite searching old Birkenhead maps. Thanks.

That's great - thanks Bert. Could I ask what date that map is from please ? I have a copy of the OS Birkenhead 1909 - which shows that street/area as School Place.......so, wonder if your map is earlier ?

That's great, thanks Bert. So, it looks like some housing on one side of Byrom Street, from the 1874 map, has gone to make way for newer housing on School Place on the 1894 map.

The 1894 map I posted may have the wrong date, as pointed out by DD. (private message)

The map may be after WW2 as Oak St is clear of housing due to bombing.

I'll try and find when Byrom St was replaced by School Place.

1894 directory has Byrom St off Watson St, 1900 directory has School Place, between 1894 and 1900, Byrom St had gone and replaced by School Place.

So, the 1874 map date should read 1894....correct ? I think I saw in another thread on here that 'court' housing was demolished in the 1890's after an Act of Parliament - I could be wrong though ! I'm not even sure that Byrom Street was 'court' housing anyway. Thanks anyway - very helpful.

No reason to believe the 1874 map is dated wrong, just the 1894.

Byrom street was there to at least 1894 and gone by 1900.

Tenders were placed in 1894 for the building of Cathcart Street School, 1896, the headmaster and assistants were hired.

The Headmaster being salaried, £200 a year. That's the time Byrom St would have disappeared and School Place introduced.

That's brilliant Bert, thanks. Would there be school records for the area that I could source/search ?
