Hi, we are in the process of buying a house only there is a bricked up building attached to the property, which the estate agent has told us used to be a bakery. We are looking for any information with regards to the bakery (if that's even what it was) including when it ceased trading. TIA Leanne

If its the building I think you mean, at one time the entrance door was on Derby Rd.
The 1938 Directory records it as 18a Derby Rd and was a Ladies Hairdressers.
My own memories of it are only from 1973 to present, over the years it has been a Bookmakers, DIY and Grocers.

The Bookmakers had no TV's, only radio commentary and if there was a queue, it was outside the door. The DIY was only for the sale of small items and small lengths of timber. The Greengrocer didn't stay open long.

There doesn't appear to be any recordings of it in earlier directories I can view.

The 1923 Directory records the premises without a number, between Charlecombe St and Chesnut Grove.
John Davies Jones, Chandler.

I was thinking 41 Chestnut Grove but found absolutely nothing on that.

The 1916 Street Directory has no recording of 41 Chesnut Grove, the trades section has J F Clarke, Baker, 41 Derby Rd.
I suspect with the building standing on the corner of Derby Rd and Chesnut Grove a mistake has been made, probably the same building.

1938 Directory, James Whyte, 41 Chesnut Grove, no occupation given.

Opposite 41 across Derby Rd is the bricked up building attached to the other corner house in Chesnut Grove, perhaps the Bakers shop.

Census Information,

1901, William Clarke, Baker & Shopkeeper,
41 Derby Rd,
1911, William Clarke, 25 Dingle Rd, Master Baker.

On both census, son, Joseph Fisher Clarke, he ended up at 41 Chesnut Grove.

41 Derby Road is miles away from Chestnut Grove, its around Victoria Road.

The four properties on the corner of Chestnut Grove and Derby Road are:-

South-West = 41 Chestnut Grove
North-West = 56 Chestnut Grove
North-East = 54 Chestnut Grove
South-East = 39 Chestnut Grove (not so sure on this one)

I know and members of the Clarke family, Bakers, occupied both premises at sometime. It's whether the bricked up building attached to 56 was ever a bakers, if that's the building Leanne means.

Ah, sorry, I'm stupidly slow - I've been trying to figure out what was meant by the bricked up building, the extension to the entrance porch of the side 56 Chestnut Grove which used to have a door on the right hand side on the Derby Road side.

I'll wake up eventually!
