any frenchie owners?
we are starting a frenchie club, meeting at THE CORNER, new brighton.
meet other owners, discuss the breed, pick up tips, maybe find a prospective sire / dam

These are sweet and lovely little dogs , but I cant understand why in order to secure those traits, dog lovers would want to encourage the breeding of short faced dogs which have,
quote (by puppy advice site on frenchies) "Quite a few potential health problems due to his deformed face" .

There are plenty of other small breeds which dont have to face life with designer breathing difficulties , susceptibility to overheating etc? (And this is a problem with even the best bred flat faced animals)

The other problem with squashed face dogs is the brain getting squeezed down the spine preventing spinal fluid flowing correctly and killing off the spine whilst causing a lot of pain (Syringomyelia, SM) - as well as the problems with eyes due to them bulging and being pushed out.

However the above picture looks like fairly normal dog to me.

From the side it would still look flat faced and so,be prone to problems. Even the best bred ones.

alas all dogs are prone to health problems.and i take your points regarding short-nosed dogs. i have had an alapaha bulldog for 5 years, and grew up with an old english bulldog.
no dog comes with a guarantee, i have a 3rd generation mongrel that developed diabetes and also became blind.
the main point of the group is to discuss and learn about the breed.exchange experiences and allow people to make informed choices
to me, the kennel club are nothing but Mengeles.
but the main point is to enjoy our pets

Im not by the way insinuating you dont look after or care for your dogs properly by the way Egg, we all know you do - Im speaking generally and in the greater picture , I see a big difference between plain health problems, and designer induced health problems.
I have the same problem with all breeds that have exaggerated features that can ultimately cause them distress, as I just cant see the justification for making them so.

I'm on a couple of Akita sites on facebook.people come on put pictures on any problems or something wrong get advice, see if anyone else has had the same problem.since being on those sites it's surprising how many illnesses the breed can suffer from, some of it down to poor breeding.Just to say the first time I ever saw a Frenchie was 19 yrs ago.we used to show our other Akita & this one used to go to ringcraft at Capenhurst.Seems Frenchies & pugs seem to be the breed of the moment, see so many of them about.
