Hi,
I know I've asked here before but I'm still looking for an electrician. My circuit tripped on Sunday morning and I think I've identified the problem (my hob). Since then, I've been without a hob and let down by someone who said they might be able to help. I know people have recommended Sanchez and I've sent him a PM but his profile says he's not been on Wiki since Nov. I really don't want to pick someone unknown out of the Yellow Pages but need to find out if it is the hob or the socket or what.
Any suggestions will be very gratefully received.

It's plugged into the socket and since I removed the plug from the socket, the circuit has been fine. When the circuit first tripped I removed all the plugs I could think of but it made no difference. Then I remembered that the hob socket was in the kitchen cupboard and when I unplugged it, everything was fine, which is why I think this might be the problem but not sure. For the last few months, I've had intermittent problems which I originally thought was due to a rodent chewing through an extension lead going into the freezer in the shed but that has been resolved and the problems continue which is why I want someone who knows what they are doing to take a look.

I wonder if you are overloading the circuit by putting the hob onto it. If you added the hob after all the wiring was done it is possible that the circuit is protected by only a 16a breaker. Hobs circuit need a 32 amp. Any sensible electrician will sort that for you in seconds.

Thanks Salmon, it's a hard one to pinpoint. The house and wiring is 18 years old and the hob was put in about two years ago when I was still working and got a new kitchen. The previous hob was gas but this electric one has worked fine since then. I'm not 100% sure the hob's the problem but don't know how else to narrow it down. Sanchez has PM'd me so hopefully he'll be able to help.
I've just remembered a single ring hob I had in the loft. It was given out a couple of years ago when one of the utilities fouled up the gas supply throughout Leasowe so at least I have this to heat up my wontons tonight!

Usually the hob socket is wired into the cooker main,is this the one that is tripping or is it the ring main circuit? if it is the cooker main you could try plugging the hob into the ring main but you would probably need an extension lead, this would give you an idea if it was the socket or the hob, have you checked the wiring in the plug? are all the rings lighting up on the hob? some times the rings go and this would cause a trip, if its all been ok up to now its probably a fault on the hob, if none of this is any good and sanchez fixes it , let me know what it was just out of curiosity, good luck

Is it an electric hob or a gas hob with just an electric ignition circuit?. There is a hell of a lot of difference in the load demand on the circuit between the two.
