As a result of being unable to take my regular dentist's X-ray - the machine he put in my mouth made me gag - he has had to refer me to Arrowe Park Macillofacial Dept for what he called a "different kind of X-ray. I one bad tooth and a couple of rotted broken ones, which, his receptionist said, may need to be extracted as they can cause bacteria, abscesses.

My appointment at the hospital is for consultation only, and they will obviously tell me then what needs to be done. However, I am still very nervous, as I have never actually been to a dental hospital before. Also, they won't have to put me asleep, will they, to extract the broken teeth? Surely they will give me the option of using cocaine?

I really would welcome any advice you could all give me, as I am just dreading the thought of going to a dental hospital.

Thanks.

Hi, the xray machine at Arrow Park dentist doesn't go in your mouth, its a machine that circles your face, no pain or distress at all. I had a wisdom tooth out in there and stiches in my gum again pain free, the staff were brilliant. Hope this helps settling your nerves.

Hi,
I am really really nervous of dentists so I really sympathise. However they have all methods to make you feel really comfortable so please try not to worry. They will explain all your options and make sure you feel as relaxed as possible. Really if I can do it anyone can

Thank you for allaying my fears. Was really worried at first, but hopefully when I go, I will be feeling much calmer. As I say, it's only an initial consultation anyway, but if they can get the job done, well all well and good.

Getting back to that horrid X-ray machine in the dentist's surgery, I don't know why they use them at all, if they cause people to gag.

Thanks for the well wishes,Guitarlad. Will keep my fingers crossed that everything goes OK. As long as I don't have to have that damned X-ray machine (The Thing From Hell) that makes me retch again, I'll be happy (STILL don't why some dentists continue to use these horrid things).

Anybody here remember that Pam Ayres poem, "Oh, I wish I'd looked after me teeth?" Well, that is the poem that has been going through my mind, over and over again, all the while I have had this accursed bad tooth!

Im pretty sure dentists have never used cocaine a class a illegal drug!!!!!!!

They use lidocaine or novocaine but not cocaine haha

They will give you a local anesthetic in your gum while your awake and pull the teeth. You wont feel a thing ive just has a cracked tooth pulled and it was fine there is nothing at all to worry about

Well, novocaine then. Whatever, as long as it does the job well in freezing the gum, it should be a painless experience.

Try not to worry overmuch and just think once you have had all the necessary work done what a lovely smile you will have.
