Wow, many thanks for very quick replies, nice to be in touch with people who know what they are doing ! I'll start research. The 'Site' was def not mobile, it was permenant, the Nco's used to come to our house to play cards and Monopoly and brought much needed rations for our large family. There was a large hut built for the men and the Nco's were billeted in the first house in the street.
The saucy buggers used to occasionally shine the searchlight at our house on my sister's bedroom! she was a teenager.

We used to collect the half used sticks of carbide ? it used to react to water I think ? after 70 years memory is bit dodgy.
