A BUS driver who stabbed his wife more than 500 times in a "volcanic eruption" is behind bars for life today.

Robert Bailey used numerous knives and a double-pronged carving fork to kill his wife, and the mother of his three children, Elaine, at their Wirral home.

She was so badly mutilated pathologists were unable to say exactly how many wounds she had suffered and could only be identified from her dental records.

Liverpool crown court heard Bailey had particularly targeted his 39-year-old wife’s face and head – which had at least 126 wounds.

Many of the blows were inflicted while former legal secretary Mrs Bailey was still alive, including an "unusual" pattern of wounds around the eyes which punctured the brain four times.

Ordering Bailey to serve a minimum of 20 years, The Recorder of Liverpool, Judge Henry Globe QC said: "What is clear is that you took the life of your wife with acts of gruesome and savage violence.

"She must have suffered terribly.

"So severe were her injuries she couldn’t be identified, except by her dental records."

Members of Mrs Bailey’s family wept as suit-wearing Bailey was sent down.

The depressed 46-year-old, who admitted murder after psychiatrists ruled he was not suffering any mental illness, stared at the floor and shook slightly as the sentence was announced.

Apparently he broke in to next doors house and was found watching their TV with the knife in his hand and a grin on his face.

Was a very very brutal attack, and like you say Ste - what triggered him to fly off the handle like that

he also helped himself to the homeowners whiskey cabinet i believe?

TBH Robbo it sounds like he just flipped and would hav killed her with the first thing that came to hand.

In his case it sounds like he has used regular kitchen knifes and a carving fork found in anyones cutlery draw

I met this bloke quite a few times at my workplace,I found him alright,other lads thought him a bit strange as he would be OK with them one day and strange the next(We have nothing at all to do with buses).A couple of weeks before this happened he was in my workplace,he had with him his daughter,who was clearly Downs Syndrome,a lovely little girl,he had convinced himself and was trying to explain to me that she was in no way Downs.It is these little ones who are left behind I feel for,they no longer have a loving Mum and also have to live with knowledge of what thier father did,the little Downs girl may never be able to fully comprehend what has happened.
