The landmark building by Dacre Hill that will probably be remembered forever as "Fairs Cameras".
I believe the building was originally a bank, Bill and Jack Fair ran it as Fairs Cameras for many years and the name has stuck despite the business closing down. Fairs was sold on but eventually collapsed, other businesses have tried to make a go since in the building.
Charles Stevens Funeral Directors are renovating the building up and moving in.

Yes they are extending their business and they will dominate the whole corner and become a very large building. I think they will be keeping the big clock that has always been there , hope so . They do a good job though and their place looks very nice, must be earning big bucks indeed....
Here's a picture when it was Martins Bank, this was only a sub-branch!
Opened in 1930 and closed in 1942

Well, I'm not so sure. Covid restrictions must have meant many relatives seeing little point in t top of the range show, given only a few people were allowed to attend, and there is an effect known unpleasantly as 'harvesting' which involves epidemics taking off a lot of old folk who would otherwise lasted a bit longer. After the epidemic is over there is a fall in the death rate.
Death rate - long term - is identical to birth rate. Epidemics are mere ripples in the tide.

The clock and tower was taken down the other day, I can't see them getting rid of it, probably just part of the refurbishment.
