The did so because his driving was dangerous and illegal. I bet you'd be crying if a dentist or doctor didn't work to their absolute professional best and you were injured or worse. I doubt you'd be happy with them saying "sorry your relative is dead, I was having an off day" Driving isn't difficult, that's why they let 17 year olds have licences.
