Just looking at some old photos in Paul Ogradys autobiography and he has one noted as being at Moreton Shore but it has part of a large steel/iron pier like structure in the background with people walking on it.. . Was there ever a pier there or is he getting his beaches mixed up..i suspect it could be new brighton

Paul O'Grady is younger than me and used to live in Tranmere as a kid. So anywhere further away than Birkenhead, would have been unknown exotic territory for him.
I lived in Moreton and never saw a pier anywhere near Moreton shore. I suspect you're right in assuming it's New Brighton Pier and he's got a bit confused.

Yes I think we can safely say he was confused, he even thought he was a woman.

If it is a photo then I'm pretty sure there wasn't a pier at Moreton in the photographic era.

Just an update to my earlier answer, you check for yourself on these old side by side comparison maps. I see no pier.

Can't see the pic, can you upload it elsewhere?

The north coast of the Wirral is shallow beaches. There would have been no use for a pier, unless it ran for many miles out to sea, like Southend Pier.

Without seeing the pic, I'd guess at Egremont or Tranmere or New Brighton.

Definitely New Brighton Pier, same hand rails, same superstructure.

I believe it is New Brighton pier. Used to walk underneath picking up coins that had been dropped by day trippers through the wood walkway above. They told us it was falling down - it was falling down so much they had to blow it up. Wish we still had the ferry and landing stage because it was the simplest way to get to Liverpool and enjoy the trip at the same time.

Here's the picture from the book. They even spell Moreton wrong.
