I know I`m an old fa*t, but with a good memory. Is there anyone else that remembers the garage that was opposite the Prince Alfred pub in Church Street. It would of stood back where the trees are on the right of the photo, next to the kitchen place. I remeber they had to replace on new Russian Moskvich cars various bits to make them work in this country. Contact points, spark plugs, ht leads, dizzy cap and maybe the fuel pump all had to be swapped over. I remember the lads had an old jeep there that they used for towing the cars around. I got offered it for £50, to much for me in those days. So come on get your thinking caps on.

yes I remember it well Zipper,it was opposite the petrol station both were owned by a family called Smales (not to sure that's the correct spelling)as far as I know the property is still in the family and rented out. It was where the tyre guys are now, behind where the LaBanque pub stood. the car wash opposite was the petrol station.

Ah, I thought it was opposite the PA. I remember behind the Lebanque was a dodgy car paint shop and a scrap yard. I went into the paint shop to ask about the scrap yard when it had shut early and I was ushered out by 4 big chappies, making sure I couldn`t see what was going on in the back ground

Larry and Terry Towers had the paint shop, the only one I can ever remember having the scrapyard was Sid Stewart but I think that was later on.

I think it was Sid. Place had 2 big gates and I seem to remember loads of mud.

I thought the showrooms and workshops were on the site now occupied by 'The Tyre Guys'. If I ever find a brochure that I got from there, complete with dealers stamp, then I'll post it on here.

The filling station across the road is now the hand car wash and there was another one, now gone, that was not too far away on the same side, going towards New Brighton.

Unfortunately, I cant remember what was next to the old bank building / windows place opposite the Five Bars...

Toronto Motors. it was what is now the car wash. I used to live in church street in the early 70's and.... my uncle bought one of the Moskovich' models, worst car ever. turned a corner and it severed the brake hose... covered under warranty of course.

Where the Tyre Guys are I can remember walking along there about 40 years ago and there was small posts about 2 foot high and a chain linking themabout every 12 foot. Also there was a small pool, made of yellowish bricks, I dont remember any fish. I think the area was a car showroom them days.

I wonder if it was my old willys jeep GRC 395. Sold it to a garage in Burns Avenue for £15 and a box of tools. That was in about 1963.

Wasn't there a "gentlemans" outfitter, think it was called Lukeman's,there in the '50s and early '60s?

Toronto Motors was in (surprisingly) Toronto Street where the gearbox specialist is now.

The Tyre Guys site used to be Wallasey Car Auction back in about 1988.
