I love the Mk1 and 2 GTEs - it just a pity Vauxhall made the interiors so bland, as they looked the nuts on the outside.

Whats going on with the Plate on the MK1 though - they where a 1.8 wherent they think

....you going 2.0 8V........or 16V wink

I've only needed to use my 18v cordless drill.

Otherwise, I'd hire a genny or buy one if I had the money

thanks mate, where do you work?
Posted By: turbo_stu Re: BrightSparks: 1983 Astra MK1 GTE - 3rd Nov 2007 12:19am
i did most of the bodywork, all they really did was prep the surface and spray it.
Posted By: BrightSpark Re: BrightSparks: 1983 Astra MK1 GTE - 14th Nov 2007 5:16pm
was it worth the £1000 stu ?
Posted By: turbo_stu Re: BrightSparks: 1983 Astra MK1 GTE - 14th Nov 2007 9:53pm
yes and no, its a good paint job, but i've had hours of looking at it close up, and know where the flaws are. also rust is bubbling though in places, partly my fault as i didn't replace the metal. i guess to me it looks like a £700-£800 paint job. its hard these days finding a decent bodyshop, which is why i might give it a go myself with the proper equipment next time.

If you have got somewhere to spray the car Stu, you might as well give it a go .My mk2 isn't fantastic but is 100% better than what is was and only cost me about £100 for the paint

a fair few rust holes there already! once you have got it shotblasted, are you going to put new panels in or just repair certian parts?
Posted By: BrightSpark Re: BrightSparks: 1983 Astra MK1 GTE - 30th Mar 2008 8:25pm
im trying to not have it plated everywhere so im getting all the parts, inner wings, full sills, arches, floor pans.... and whatever i need

done a bit today, carved the sills and arches off, took the battery tray out and cut the outriggers off, its mighty rusty

most of the sills was made up of fiberglass and filler bodge

If it where a classic, or even a rare GTE, maybe fix that, but just a Mk1 Astra.... think

Scrap it and find one thats at least 1/2 decent. Something that bad is just going to eat money, and once rot sets in - especially that badly, its fooked frown

i hate to sound like mr defeatist but i cant realy see the point in it as stuy says - its not like a special car to do this too (bit like spending a shit load of money on a treasure hunt and looking for gold, when you could be looking for dimonds at the same expence), but if its what you want to do then im happy to see the progress you make and good luck to you bud
Posted By: BrightSpark Re: BrightSparks: 1983 Astra MK1 GTE - 31st Mar 2008 7:42pm
i know.... its kind of dishearting seeing it, but im going to give it a shot, i mean its not going to cost a lot, old mans a fabricator welder so steel and welding isnt going to be a major problem. its just going to take a long time, ive got all the panels, im looking at 200 for the rest of the panels

wish me luck
