I have been meaning to put these on for a while. After being told the whereabouts of an AK-AK gunsite on the hill I trundled on down and found these names inscribed into the rock.

Is there another one there - namely G Gordon who died 28th June 1940.

This is most strange that 3 Gordon's died within a few days of each other BEFORE the air raids. None of them appear on War Memorial lists for the area either.

Have found an A.J.GORDON for you mate in a book moreton patriots
any help mate?
Posted By: Dava2479 Re: Names found on Bidston hill - 22nd Jan 2009 6:58pm
Does it give names of any relations.Need T OR J.Gordon.
Posted By: Dava2479 Re: Names found on Bidston hill - 22nd Jan 2009 7:01pm
I have a theory that if this guy who died at that location,he may of been operating an AA gun.He may also of been attached to artillary and may have come from a different area than Birkenhead. If this is the case then his name will be found on a memorial in his home town and therefor this maybe why he is not on our towns list of honours.

Thanks a lot bud,I don`t expect you to find the name,as I explained befor I have a theory that I suspect he is not from this area, maybe not even Wirral.
Posted By: uptoncx Re: Names found on Bidston hill - 22nd Jan 2009 8:07pm

Carl's Cam lists all the names on most of the memorials in Cheshire. Follow the link, then click on "-memorials" in the line starting "Photos of:".

I've just looked up J Gordon on the GRO death index for the 3rd qtr of 1940, there are 11 of them, none of them local:

James 71 years S.Shields
James M.D. 69 years N.Bucks
Jemima 46 years Durham N.
John 48 years Stockport
John 79 years Conway
John 74 years Birmingham
John 68 years Wolverhampton
John under 1 year Wolverhampton
John E. 65 years W.Glamorgan
John R.S. 25 years Warwick
Julia 81 years Hull

Posted By: Dava2479 Re: Names found on Bidston hill - 23rd Jan 2009 10:17pm
Uptoncx,I`m impressed with the length and effort you have gone to,however out of the list I think we can discount the following......

James 71 years S.Shields
James M.D. 69 years N.Bucks
John 79 years Conway
John 74 years Birmingham
John 68 years Wolverhampton
John under 1 year Wolverhampton
John E. 65 years W.Glamorgan
Julia 81 years Hull
Jemima 46 years Durham N.

This now leaves us with 2 possibilities....

John 48 years Stockport
John R.S. 25 years Warwick

It's before the air raids started ... suppose it could have been an accident of some sorts.
Posted By: Dava2479 Re: Names found on Bidston hill - 25th Jan 2009 1:03am
Maybe right but you can not discount the possiblity of bombers straffing the AA gun sites on thier way in or out of thier runs. The guy may of been hit a few weeks befor and died on that date and also like you say it could of been an accident.I suppose we will never find out.
Posted By: diggingdeeper Re: Names found on Bidston hill - 26th Jan 2009 6:02pm
According to some sources first Bomb landed in Wallasey on 1 May 1940 this was first bomb for the whole of Merseyside, most other sources talk about August 1940.

I think 1 may 1940 date is getting confused with 1 may 1941 the "first" day of the Blitz.

The bombers wouldn't straff, especially in areas with defences, they stayed as high as they could (at least 5000ft), too big and too slow (just over 200mph) making them an easy target.
Posted By: phalinmegob Re: Names found on Bidston hill - 26th Jan 2009 10:04pm
i heard that the first bombs landed in osmaston road in prenton not wallasey.9th august 1940 according to one of the boumphrey books

My father always said that the first bomb on Merseyside fell on August 1940 in Prenton. Can't recall if he said Osmaston Road or not.

Unlike books by other authors on the Wirral, Ian Boumphrey's books are well researched and the info. within can be relied on.

osmaston is were the war memorial is ..............

That is correct and it also claimed a victim, which was a German housekeeper/cleaner.Talk about irony.

SUICIDE ON BIDSTON HILL!!!!
The body of 54 yr old Thomas Jones was found slumped in bushes on Bidston Hill, a pistol by his side, police verdict - suicide.
He had come over from Canada to work with his Brother in Law, William Hughes in Liverpool. Having found no work and down on his luck he left a note requesting hs death certificate to be sent to his wife in Ontario.
He had then gone to the woods with the pistol and shot himself thru the heart!!
Sunday, 20th September 1885
