The Golly character, a black-faced minstrel doll with colourful clothes, was on the label for the best part of a century.

It spawned badge collections and dolls but was condemned by some as an offensive caricature of black people, based on slave dolls.

The Golly was axed from TV adverts in 1988, and disappeared from the labels in 2002.

Oh my god, its like a part of our heritage. It was bad enough when they were forced to removed the Golly Wog lol, now the jam itself is leaving our shelves!!

Cue internet petition lmao...

yumyum Their loss.

What brand do you buy Ste? I usually buy the ones that are sold in Home Bargains tbh, its a decent brand but quite cheap, can't remember the name.

Can't say I have ever bought Robertsons or Hartleys... like Golden Shreds though, but I often get homemade stuff off me mum.

Ahhhh the memories are flooding back, every Sunday I had to put up with me mum listening to it lol.
Posted By: MissGuided Re: Oh My God - 8th Dec 2008 1:10pm
It was Billy and Wally. And some woman used to play every week who sounded like Lily Savage but was probably actually a woman. Come to think of it Aunty Muriel sounded a lot like Lily Savage...

My hamster used to listen to Classic FM.
Posted By: MattLFC Re: Oh My God - 8th Dec 2008 1:15pm
A rather splendid choice, however I must say BBC Radio 3 is somewhat higher quality broadcasting.
Posted By: MissGuided Re: Oh My God - 8th Dec 2008 1:16pm
Maybe it would have lived longer had it listened to Radio 3
Posted By: MattLFC Re: Oh My God - 8th Dec 2008 1:17pm
No, probably would have died a death of listening to the magic number all the time; magic can be bad for you I hear...

At least thats what Uther Pendragon says anyway.

Yes - make it yourself. I have been doing that for years. The effort involved is small and the end result is FANTASTIC compared to the shop bought stuff.

I just went to count - in the garage I have 57 jars of jam from this year. Blackberry, strawberry, blackcurrant, plum (pale and deep red), rhubarb & ginger. Normally I have damson as well but the crop of fruit was poor this year. Most of the fruit cost either nothing (blackberry) or very little (buy boxes of strawberrys in BH market late Saturday afternoon when they are glad to get rid of them). Some I get from PYO places eg blackcurrants / raspberrys because now I have given up my allotment I no longer have enough to make jam as well as to eat.

Snod - is it really your garage or the home-crafted nuclear bunker? Are you stockpiling water and tungsten light bulbs too?
Posted By: Wench Re: Oh My God - 8th Dec 2008 7:33pm
I've only ever made my own jam once, but I do like to make my own soup, bread, cakes, biscuits and ice cream.
Posted By: SoundLad Re: Oh My God - 8th Dec 2008 9:34pm
