I recall going with my Mum to the old market and an enduring memory is the cheese stalls, most of which seemed to be from farms in Shropshire or Cheshire. The quality of those cheeses was wonderful.

I wonder if cheese-makers still make the journey to Birkenhead to sell their product.

I too have fond memories of the old market, in my case, for the treacle toffee which we used to buy in a slab and break up at home with the toffee hammer, which I still have.
Thinking of cheese; the very finest Cheshire cheese, Appleby's unpasteurised, is made not far from me, at Weston under Redcastle, Shropshire.

Hi Chris....Wow! That name rings a bell, Appleby's smile I recall there was a number of stalls but my Mum had her favorite and it may well have been them

What year are you thinking of? I think Appleby's didn't start until 1952. I've just been out to a local farm shop to buy some: this shop has lots of great stuff for sale but the prices rival Fortnum & Mason.

Chris, you haven't got a dog called Grommit have you?
Love cheese myself, can't get any Dorset Blue Vinney at the moment, it went off after the floods and my supplier can't get any. Still, I live in hope.

Lewis's in Greasby used to sell Appleby's Cheshire and it was THE BUSINESS. Cheese as it used to be; the taste and texture took me right back. Sadly they don't stock it any more, theirs is all prepacked now. You might find it at the farmer's markets in West Kirby or New Ferry, maybe?

They do stock Appleby's. Also, Waitrose stock it and these:

I'm lucky; we have two stockists in town and one on the outskirts.
For anyone who likes Cheshire and hasn't tried Appleby's: it will open your eyes as to what a traditional Cheshire is like.

Hi Chris, it would be between 1965 to 1967. I'm very envious of your cheese supply smile Waitrose you say sells Appleby's Cheshire?

Waitrose, yes, but since you're in London, Neal's Yard, Fortnum & Mason, John Lewis, Oxford St.
Have a look on the Appleby's website.

There's a few cheese sellers at New Ferry Farmers Market, and the West Kirby one. Lancashire, Cheshire and a Welsh one.

The cheese company there doesn't list Applebys. It does list a number of "mucked about" cheeses. yuck.
Still, sounds like a place worth a visit.
