Police to prosecute more than EIGHTY drivers for filming lorry crash on M40 which caused seven-hour traffic jams.

Police are to prosecute more than 80 drivers for allegedly using their mobile phones to film the scene of a lorry crash on the M40.

The accident closed parts of the busy motorway from around 11am on Friday leaving some stuck in traffic for up to seven hours.

An articulated lorry smashed into the central reservation, spilling 200 litres of animal feed across all three lanes of the northbound carriage.

The Government is currently considering increasing the penalty for using a mobile phone at the wheel.

The plans include making the fine £150 instead of £100 and increasing the penalty points from three to four for non-HGV drivers, and from three to six for HGVs.

Between 2009-2014, the Government said 3,611 accidents occurred where at least one driver was using a mobile phone, although this is believed to be vastly underestimated as many drivers may have put away their phone before police arrive.

My pet hate when driving is seeing other road users on the phone at the ear. Not that difficult to get a holder and use hands free nowadays.

I feel as drivers we get punished heavily for minor errors like 45mph in a 40 zone, yet the same applies for using a mobile phone (norm 3pts and £60-£80 fine. I feel the speeder has more control than the driver phoning/texting.

Suppose it is still "using your mobile phone"

If someone would only come up with an App as soon as your phone rings and you answer it while still driving, your car blows up! pain in the arse, 20 points on licence and £10,000 fine maybe then they get the message!

Excellent, I love the other safety device - a large sharp point sticking out the steering wheel, it would improve the quality of driving no end.

Looking at the dash of some of the latest cars with their multi option touch screens you have to negotiate, I sometimes think theyre not far behind holding your phone to your ear in the danger stakes. (not that I approve of taking calls on hand held, I dont) .

How did the police identify them? Was a bobby there watching the Q and taking numbers, or did there happen to be an automatic camera at that point, or what , do we know?
Most of them will have put them online eg YouTube facebook , in this day n age why don't cthey make cars that the phone won't work in them only for 999 calls

Issue all police cars with a 2lb club hammer and anyone caught using a phone while driving has an option - go to court/ pay the fine or hit the phone with the hammer and no further action - UNLESS caught again.

When I am driving and I see people talking on their phones, I make a point to photograph them and their car. When I have enough pictures I'll be sending them to the police for them to process.

Sounds to me like you're cruisin' for a bruisin', so taking photographs when you're driving is OK is it?

Hi Steven, does "pfffft" mean that you, quite rightly, think that driving holding a phone to you're ear is a contemptible thing to do? Or does "pfffft" mean that you think that these idiots are doing nothing wrong?

Well I would of thought that everyone had hands free by now.

I mean it's built into most stereos now.
