When you shoots up do you mean right away or soes it rise slowly???

And also how hot does it get.

Dont forget the engines working harder the faster you go/rev it.

Check your water levels?

Have you lost water, if so then top it up and see if it happens again.

If it does then it could be the head gasket,
i had an older car that it done this too.

You can also check if you have lost water between tests
while its ticking over if the water hoses are rock hard
as in full of pressure?

There should be some squeeze in them.
But not rock hard.

So what's the water levels like?

Have you noticed any oil loss?

Have you done a service on it recently? An Oil change e.t.c.?

It could be that you have the wrong viscosity oil (either too thick or thin) so it becomes a lot hotter?

Do you notice any 'mayonnaise' looking gunk on your oil cap?

Rising oil temp is no indication of a head gasket problem.

As already mentioned, has it recently been serviced and the wrong oil put in...

Hotter oil can be a sign of Big end bearings failing and they generate more heat as there is more play in them, or ot could be something as simple as a faulty sensor....

Id seriously check for big end wear though (Or any other wet bearing journals) - it was the first sign when I had my Skyline, that the bottom end was about to let go - thankfully I stopped before punching a hole in the block, though it turned out the engine was already past the point of no return frown

i take it your car is the zetec s? if so they are prone to haveing a dodgy h gasket on older ones as they rectified the problem on y reg onwards.

if you have had a service done did you use the 5/30 oil or the 10/30 oil cos if it was the latter the hicker oil blocks the oil ways for the head which could aggrivate the proble.
