194 Rock Station Hotel Highfield Road
Indexed
i used to live across the road from there i was in there one night and watched guys sniffing coke off the tables lol
nice place
rock ferry always was a posh place even back in the 1950s
The drugs have gone from the pub now and its now privately owned. She's has had a complete refurb looks so different now and has an all day carvery for the pleasure of all near or far ......in the begining its was bad then it got better and then the Rock Station was reborn ...try it love to hear all your comments :-)
myself and the staff love the pub and do everything we can to keep it clean and welcoming to all . as the manager i am not new to the area i have been here since early childhood and seen the area change in many ways.I agree it is such a shame to see so many empty buildings in the area but the future is looking brighter for rockferry.
I worked in Rock Ferry in the early 80's and my in laws still live there. I too have seen a lot of changes, mostly for the best. Unemployment is the biggest problem and that is mirrored nationally.
i have a book of old photos of the Birkenhead area and there is one shot of this pub in there
from about 1950 s i think. I had a spell working in there a a part-time Barman during the summer
of 1972. The Landlord then was Max Ithell who was a keen Evertonian . He was a big drinker himself and a smoker also. He died of Cancer and his wife took over the licence of the place.
The regulars raised an awful lot of money for childrens charities throughout the 1970s. The
weekly raffles were run by Paul Dennett and Chris Kennedy -both of them became Teachers.
Chis taught for many years at Rock Ferry High and Paul has been living near Hamburg and
teaching there for over 30 years. Both lads were born and bred Rockferrians as i am myself.
May Jones worked behind the Bar until she was in her 80s ! Only a tiny woman but she could stand
up to any grown man in an argument - and she often did !
Id love to have that photo in the pub littlestan any ideas were i could get my hands on such a thing please
the pictures above dont do her justice i get some new ones posted shortly
The Rock Station Hotel in 1888:
What were they thinking of? Comparing the last picture and the one at the beginning of the thread and you just think vandalism. it's obviously the same little corner of the building but the beautiful ornate brickwork just rendered over. What a shame. Progress? I don't think so.
Brilliant picture though Uptoncx

Hi i was going back over 10 years i will pop in tere again soon
Often had a pint in this pub,had a couple before I got married over the road at St Anne's.in 1960.We always knew the pub as Ritchies
Hard to believe the difference from old and new, would be nice to see if that part of the building is in anyway restorable
lived in rock ferry for 22 years and never frequented the pub until last week, I had taken my car to the scrap yard at green lane and my partner and I walked to rock ferry and had a drink in the rock station.Very nice staff pleasant will call again in the near future.
Does anybody remember the New Ferry Hotel, I once worked there for about 2 years and realy enjoyed it. As a matter of fact I meet my partner there while he was working on the big houses at the bottom of the dell. He called into the pub(sad for him) but great for me because once I had seen him that was it, all the other fellas never stood a chance even though they tried to get round me and kept asking for a date, but the young stallion won. This pub holds lots of good memories for me as I served my dad when he came in which was every Fri-Sun sadly not with us now.I am still with my fella after 34 years(served st least two life sentences)
whent there most nights from 1975 to 1980

The picture is well out of copyright, if you would like a copy of the full size scan, PM me your e-mail address.
I knew Max Ithell and his wife Maureen. Maureen is in her 80's now but unlike May Jones is no longer pulling pints. But like May she can still be a fiercesome lady! I remember quite a few of the Rock Station bar staff from the 70's - Nellie Jones, Barbara Quayle, Dick Ganley and Margaret. All lovely, loyal and hardworking.
I think this was done many years before because under the render are tiles ..... they look very similar in size to the ones that cover the front of the Bedford Pub.... One of the gents that frequents the Rock tells me the Bedford and Rock had some family connection years ago and the Bedford was known as Lukes and the Rock was Ritchies .... The lady who owned worked or managed the Rock had a surname of Richardson .....

Yeah - we always referred to the Bedford as Luke Lee's.
I knew the Landlord/Landlady from the late60's / early 70's. They were Eric and Gertie. I was their Grandchild
Planning application has been put in to demolish the Rock Station Hotel and replace it with with 25 flats.
SOURCE
Apparently it was renamed to "The Rock" sometime ago, either ways, it was on fire today and the police are treating it as arson.
