Staff terror as axe wielded in Wirral shop robbery

Robbers armed with an axe threatened staff at a Wirral supermarket.

Detectives are appealing for information following the raid at the Co-op on Cross Lane, Bebington, on Saturday night.

The two men entered the store at around 7.40pm, one carrying the weapon.

They approached the counter and shouted threats at staff, demanding money. Witnesses described how one of the robbers took hold of a terrified member of staff and told him to open a till.

The pair took a quantity of cash then fled the scene on foot.

Workers were left shaken but were not injured.

Several people said the robbers were seen waiting in a phone box outside before carrying out the raid.

A man who was in the shop at the time of the robbery said: “Everyone is OK and fortunately no-one was hurt.

“One of them grabbed the lad on the till and he opened it because they had an axe.

“A few people came in saying they saw them in the phone box outside.”

Staff said they did not know how much money the robbers had taken.

They said the raid was captured on the store’s security cameras and the images were passed to police.

Security at the store was stepped up last night with a guard working alongside cashiers on the late shift.

Another witness said: “People said they were outside in the phone box for about five minutes before they came in.

Been a load of burglary and drug problems around the shops at Broadway. How about microchipped money?

How about micro chips for the known offenders so they set off alarms wherever they go.
