Estate and saloon versions of Passat follow Tiguan's lead with beefed-up R-line trim level

VW has kicked the Passat up a gear with a new ‘R-Line’ performance trim level for its family favourite. The looks have been beefed up with new ‘Monte Carlo’ 17-inch alloys and a chrome grille, while chunky side, front and rear skirts make up the ‘R’ styling pack.

Additions to the interior include a multi-function leather steering wheel along with electrically adjustable seats and cruise control, as well as an electronic tyre pressure monitoring system.

The Passat R-line treads a pumped up body kit and racier lines, macho looks but no mechanical upgrades under the skin. The suspension, steering and brakes are identical to those found on a standard Passat, while the engine line-up includes a 120bhp 1.4-litre TSI and a 1.8-litre petrol, along with two 2.0-litre TDIs, with outputs of 110bhp and 140bhp.

A six-speed manual transmission will come as standard, although the more-powerful diesel will get VW’s excellent six-speed DSG. Prices will start at £17,040, resulting in £2,470 worth of extra kit for a mere £600 price hike.
