Doesn't deposit normally go to your solicitor/conveyor, not the estate agent? Wouldn't trust an estate agent with my shoe lace!

no nower days it goes in to a Deposit Protection Scheme, if this isn't done nower days then the landlord can be fined.

My granddaughter was able to transfer it from the deposit protection scheme to another estate agent recently

We've recently had dealings with DPS. They will only release the deposit once the landlord or agent has agreed to.
You will have to find another deposit and then claim the other back.
