Wirral History & Heritage Fair

Presented by Wirral History & Heritage Association

Saturday 5th March 2011 10am-4pm
At Birkenhead Town Hall
Hamilton Square CH41 5BR

This is a marvellous opportunity to view exhibits displayed by many special interest groups and societies within this magnificent and historical building.

There will be representative from most of Wirral’s Local History and Family History Societies, Research and Friends Groups, Archaeology Groups, plus Conservation, Preservation and Civic Societies.

Books and postcards will be one sale

Angus Tilston MBE will be providing a free local history film show in the Conference Room where light refreshment can be obtained for a modest price.

There will also be activities for children.

We also hope to have the Wirral Transport Museum Green Goddess fire engine and historical buses for visitors outside the Town Hall on the day.

Entrance to the fair is free.

The building is situated near to Hamilton Square Station.

I was pencilled in for a Haggis shoot that weekend,(plenty of them on the moors this season) but I've cancelled it and will be at the Town Hall do instead. Chriskay is going too. In a recent PM, Mark said he may go. No doubt he will confirm that.

Always too much to see/do when I come down. Not enough time !!!

Can someone email
Wirral History & Heritage Association and hopefully get a reply about what time this is on

Did anyone ever get the courtesy of a reply to the email(s) sent enquiring about Angus Tilston's film ?

I for one, am quite keen to see it/them.

The times of showing are .........................?
Posted By: Geekus Re: Wirral History & Heritage Fair - 6th Feb 2011 10:27am
Try checking the other thread about the Wirral History & Heritage Association on the Wirral History site.

Last time I looked the WHHA hadn't responded to anyone ...but that's a whole other story mate.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Wirral History & Heritage Fair - 6th Feb 2011 10:37am
Yes, I was trying not say anything TOO negative about WHHA, but ............................. !

Thanks.

Angus Tilston's film
Phoned him up and he will be showing films from about 10-30 through the day until 3ish.
some of his dvds (Pleasures Past) will be on sale at discount prices.
Have suggested he have a look at wikiwirral

Thanks Derek. Much appreciated !
Posted By: Geekus Re: Wirral History & Heritage Fair - 7th Feb 2011 12:10pm
Thanks from me also Derek. Glad somebody's in the know.

I'm sure the whole event will prove very popular and it's good that the WHHA are continuing to stage it. Like Pinzgauer, I'm not trying to knock the association and their efforts at promoting Wirral's heritage, but they do need to sort out their web-site and help keep people informed.
Posted By: chriskay Re: Wirral History & Heritage Fair - 27th Feb 2011 2:29pm
Just a heads-up; this is next Saturday.
Posted By: Bezzymate Re: Wirral History & Heritage Fair - 27th Feb 2011 2:43pm
Do we have a meeting place or just arrive as and when?
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Wirral History & Heritage Fair - 27th Feb 2011 3:10pm
As far as I'm aware, no one has arranged any particular times for meeting up. Myself, ChrisKay and diggingdeeper are going in the morning. I think then a general mooch around the Wirral later ?

All very flexible at this stage I think. Suggestions welcome.

Having 'done' Perch Rock I just skirted that table because I didn't want the poor woman telling me things I already knew or giving me incorrect information. (I know, I'm getting above myself)

Hey croc, by my estimation there were also an additional Eight! Wow, 30 odd of us!
I reckon that qualifies us for our own table, next year.
I also think that there will be new members, to welcome, over the next few days, as a result of the badges. grin

haha! I got loads of info, of upcoming events/ walks, from various stalls. (Including fort p.)
Thought it best to 'filter' them in 'Up and Coming', date according coz otherwise, they will get 'lost/ forgotten'.

With us all walking round with our wiki badges on the forum has been well advertised. I had a few people noticing my wiki badge, bar the one or two who thought I was staff.

Today was my first outing and I am proud to part of a great community forum.

There is one on the 27 march to port sunlight

Posted By: Nienna Re: Wirral History & Heritage Fair - 5th Mar 2011 11:02pm
The port sunlight one looks good!

How long is the walk and where does the route go etc.

I suppose there is also an obligatory 'watering hole' stop too sometime lol!
Posted By: kermit Re: Wirral History & Heritage Fair - 5th Mar 2011 11:04pm
Its normally just a couple of hours, not normally an alcoholic beverage in the local only on the pub meets to discuss the next ghost hunts they are fun

Meet at the Bidge Inn, wander about for 2 hours or so, there is no regimented route. The watering hole stop is none obligatory but often recomended.

The pub meets are where we stock up on beverages!
Posted By: Nienna Re: Wirral History & Heritage Fair - 5th Mar 2011 11:14pm
Thanks for the info...where about do you all meet?

Just to go off topic.. not sure where to put this .. but after the hertage fair we went to the Williamson art gallery and although the majority of it is closed at the momentt due to roof repairs.. they do have a very good exhibition of local scenes by a local artist called Alan Mackay.
Sadly he died in 2008 but his works are outstanding and he was so talented, he also had to deal with having autism... so he was indeed a remarkable man.

As I am newish not sure where to put this info on here so any mods please move it if needed... but if you love the old scenes of Birkenhead and Liverpool and appreciate a brilliant artistic talent then do go along and see the exhibtion!
Posted By: RUDEBOX Re: Wirral History & Heritage Fair - 5th Mar 2011 11:14pm
2 hours max. Don't think we've ever visited a Pub?
Oh yes-just the once after last years Haymarket walk, for one. smile
Generally, we wander, as opposed to a Miliatary Hike!
Its relaxing, a 'switch off' and everybody is welcome!

I took my Mum around there yesterday. Didn't see anyone with a Wiki badge on. But then it was quite busy. Where do you get the Wiki car stickers from?

TC had some this week. Check out this thread and drop TC a line and I'm sure he'll sort you out when he gets any more

Did anyone take a pic of the inflatable dinghy, underwater camera, and the elderly bearded chap outside.
Got talking to him and found he was an Archaeologist or did diving for them all over the world.
His group are hoping to find a roman port on Wirral maybe round the Meols area.
What had me thinking was when he told me about king William using over 200 ships anchored off Hoylake to take his army across to Ireland.
He told he had swum underground from top of Beaufort Road( where the Birkett ends up) to the docks
He was 75 and still did the odd Archaeology dives.

Am only sorry the show was packing up and didn't have more time to chat with him.
Anyone know who he was?

I wasn't at the event, so didn't meet the archaeologist guy you talk about, but it sounds like he might be part of the McDonalds Marine/Wirral Archaeology group. They have a web-site if you're interested in checking.

I can say for certain that they're the people looking for the Roman Fort. smile

I looked at the rib but thought it was RNLI so I just moved on, I was at the archaeology group table, having a look at some shell shrapnel, didn't get chance to talk as they were busy with showing some lady the finds they had on show, I heard certain professors name mentioned over some lead, so I thought not today and wondered off to see the guy at the merchant navy radio operators stand, who I am doing something for, I hadn't realised I'd joined Cameron's big society. laugh

confirmed they were McDonalds Marine/Wirral Archaeology group by TCs' pic with yellow jacket in dinghy.
Fairly sure he said port and not fort they were looking for
Posted By: Geekus Re: Wirral History & Heritage Fair - 7th Mar 2011 12:39pm
You're right derek. Amongst other things, the group are attempting to survey the original port and village of Meols.

That said, I thought Peter France mentioned in one his newspaper articles that a Roman 'fort' may have also existed near Meols. Maybe I just dreamt that bit... laugh
Posted By: Archaeo Re: Wirral History & Heritage Fair - 7th Mar 2011 1:44pm
Met these guys, nice chaps. They think (as far as I am aware) that Portus Setantiorum - a lost port described on Ptolomy's map of Britain may be situated at Meols - hence their search in that area.

Obviously without this connection, Meols has been an important site from at least the Iron Age, so here's hoping they pick something up. There's obviously a settlement off the coast, but I don't know enough about marine archaeology to say how they're planning to map it.

Couldn't resist a dit or two on the morse key and looks like I'm getting roped in for Perch Rock "Thetis" exhibit and the radio room. Ah well, it'll give me something to do.

They had a laptop showing a cracking picture of the Peninsula and it showed that the river Mersey came out at West Kirby with a lot of land on the seaward side joined up to Lancashire, as I said I had to give up because they were busy.

Anyone tell me when the Thetis exhibition is on at Perch Rock, or has it already started? confused

(Interesting comment about the River Mersey, davew3. Thanks for that. Just sorry I missed it all.) smile

Nice pic of my boat, specially with the people in the background.
I'm looking for the port first and hoping to find a fort somewhere close by, it's turning out to be a huge project.
For those who asked it's Bernie McDonald who was with the boat, he keeps trying to claim he's retired smile
The project is through McDonalds Marine, and yes I know I have a very similar boat to the RNLI.

Welcome Ruth...

Thanks for confirming the fort thing. I was starting to think I'd imagined it!

Hope you're going to be filming all this for the Discovery Channel?!! hi

Welcome to wikiwirral.
I enjoyed talking briefly to Bernie McDonald at the show.
Besides meeting other wiki members I thought it one of my highlights of my day.
Where did you dig up the guards of your boat - the Cheshire Redcoats?
Being cheeky here could you post a pic here for us of the laptop pic and keep us informed some time of your progress at Meols.

Welcome Ruth, if your boat had had a big sign saying "we are using this boat to look for a fort off Meols coast" then I think your boat and the gentleman who was looking after it would have had lots more attention from the Wiki gang and the people who went to the town hall, even though the RLNI is a good and a real charity to support, I think with charites advertising on tv and getting in your way at the supermarkets and on the High st is starting to numb people including me.
I'am more interested in the fort and ask could you start a topic on the history forum for us about it.

Ruth, I think you've been googling your own name again to find this website!

Bernie MacDonald. Taught me to SCUBA dive at BSAC Guinea Gap baths before I went commercial. He used to have a dive shop in Prescott Road Liverpool. The lady (Sue) at the desk inside is (I think) his daughter. He invited me to come out & play sometime!

I reckon it is a permanent exhibit anyway. Been asked to get involved up there so going to give it a go once the bloke gets in touch with me. That's what I get for going to the Wirral History day.

Ongoing from that day and the little sit on the bus, found my bus conductor badge but can't find my driver badge. I'll have to keep looking.

That's me just back home for the first time since the History Fair. Went from Birkenhead to Chateau ChrisKay's for a pleasant break - Thanks Chris !

It was great to meet up with some of the crowd on Saturday and put some faces to names. I for one enjoyed the Fair. Plenty to see and more than enough info to (try and) absorb ! Got dozens of leaflets to read sometime.

There really are times when I wished I lived a bit nearer "home" !!
For those who haven't yet been, Gallagher's Pub (Chester St.?) is highly recommended. A good pint, great pub, friendly folk. I didn't indulge in a short back and sides whilst there. Too bloody cold outside!

Thanks to all for making it a great day.
