they try to get you to click on the links (which can put keyloggers which can see what keys you press and get your passwords you use) or they ask you to ring them to fix your bank details

Emails are quickly becoming distrusted.
You need to change your mind set, that every email is a fake unless your expecting it.
And financial questions, visit the source direct not by clicking on the link inside the email.
The point of these emails is to direct you to a fake site looking like paypal. You then enter your log in details, which can be recoreded and used on real paypal site, or linked to say a ebay account. Remember if your pay pal account does not have the funds it may take funds direct from your bank.
This is the same story for your banks.
See a email fake or not as a mesage left and visit that website by typing the address in your browser yourself and not on a link.

Is just opening the emails themselves safe as long as you dont open any links (so you can assess their validity)

Is just opening the emails themselves safe as long as you dont open any links (so you can assess their validity ?) I ask because as an example, I got an email the other day . In the 'from' box, it just had NO REPLY and in the subject box ' Your Direct Debit' . Thats it , no clue as to who it might be from . Nearly everyone has direct debits, so I just presumed it was a phishing email and ignored it . It turned out,to be from OVO, my new energy company , asking me to verify the DD details they had were correct. My question is , would any email like that with no clear indication of who its from , have been safe to open ,to assess if it was genuine or not, as long as I didnt click on any links within?

Generally all legitimate emails from utility companies that are specifically directed at the customer will have the customer's name in them.
From your description I would still be highly suspicious of the email you received from OVO - why on earth would they need "confirmation" of direct debit details, either they have them or they haven't, it doesn't make any sense.
At the moment there is a number of phishing emails going around and they have the exact same subject as you describe, I have never received a legitimate email with that sort of title.

Hi DD . I agree, looked very suspicious. I rang OVO and verified it was actually from them . Asked why it just had NO REPLY in the from box , and they had no idea, but said they had definitely sent it to me on that day , on that subject. I have to say it doesnt give me confidence in changing to this company!
Im still wondering though - if that had been a phishing email - would it only have been a problem if Id clicked on a link within, or would merely opening it have caused me to have a virus or something?

As long as you don't click on a link, emails are normally safe, though nothing is absolutely safe.
OVO seem to be one of the better small energy companies.

Just had one supposedly from virgin media . Very convincing with all the virgin media logos and colours Feeling I may have fell for it a while back. The link in the email sent me too an address www.gleschener.com. fortunately I spotted it and reported it Your latest Virgin Media Bill cannot be processed Dear (my email address) We were unable to deduct the payment for your latest bill. The payment processor has detected invalid billing information associated with your Virgin Media account. Your Virgin Media service is due to be suspended on 30 January, 2016. To avoid service interruption please update your billing details now. How can I update my billing details?. To update your billing details visit https://my.virginmedia.com/billing Anything else you'd like to know??. If you need help understanding your bill, you'll find answers at virginmedia.com/help. Kind regards, The Virgin Media team Whats more worrying is that I have had genuine emails/phone calls about my bills not processing because I cancelled direct debits. Had a genuine call couple days ago reminding me they couldn't get payment because Direct Debit was not set up so this phishing email has come just out of chance or they have hacked Virgin media website or my own account.

If you still have access to your account, change the password.
