Don't know if I have an issue or not but I'll ask away.
New tv shows me the format the channel is being shown on. Tv is 1080p and free view hd. When I switch to hdmi1 which is virgin hd box the info bar shows 720. Should this not be 1080? Hdmi2 is my Xbox and when this is on it shows 1080. And when I got to normal tv which should be hd free view it shows 520.
I'm confused. Can somebody explain it to me please?
Thanks

I think its informing you of what the device is capable of.
Not all HD is streamed at 1080p. Virgin may record at 720p which could be an internal setting.
I only show True 1080p with a blue ray player.
I dont think you have any problems.

Its normally up scaled from 360p Thats what sky do if I remember.
Its down to to bandwidth. Full HD is heavy.
Free view is like sky too. Try a google for Freeview HD resolution. Im sure its a common question asked and answered.

You are getting HD, sort of.
The current, general resolutions/definitions are: Low Definition TV (LDTV) = 240 Standard Definition TV (SDTV) = 360 Enhanced Definition TV (EDTV) = 480 & 576 High Definition TV (HDTV) = 720 Full HDTV (FHD) = 1080 4K Ultra High Definition TV (4K HDTV) = 2160 8K Ultra High Definition TV (8K HDTV) = 4320
The key words are up to. Just because a TV is 1080, does not mean every signal it receives will be, it just means the TV can handle signals up to 1080.
HD is used very loosely by Sky/Virgin/Freeview, A "HD" broadcast can mean anything from 480 up. AFAIK there are no Full HD (1080p) broadcasts yet.

In the settings on the virgin box you can select higher resolutions.

Sky broadcast in 1080interlaced, 1080p would need a cable as big as your head ! Not sure we're your getting 360 from Mark. I think it will be the setting on the virgin box
Sky by default display in 1080i

Virgin engineer told while fitting my tivo that neither virgin or sky can broadcast at 1080p they just dont have the tech at the moment. Only way to get true HD is thru your blu-ray players

I'm afraid the Virgin engineer is misinformed.
1080i and 1080p are effectively the same broadcast resolution but with either an interlaced or non interlaced display.
The Virgin HD boxes are actually capable of the very latest 4k resolutions (demo'd at the good home shows in Earls Court and I think Glasgow).
Broadcasters don't yet create much content at the higher resolutions though.
I have my TIVO set at 1080p and it simply upscales anything that is broadcast at a lower reolution
