The handbook will tell you and if you don't have that then Google will for sure. You don't say what car you have but I will be surprised if Google does not give the answer. Normally very straight forward to split the fob to access the battery.

I have a Renault and the fob is a complete mare to open. I have to use a combination of very gentle brute force to open it

I think Halfords or similar will do it. You'll need to buy the battery somewhere like that anyway

I think Halfords or similar will do it. You'll need to buy the battery somewhere like that anyway I went to Halfords first and they would sell me the battery but would not fit it - they're not allowed to apparently. The key cutting / phone unlocking shop opposite Primark in Birkenhead did fit one for me but all he did was force it open the same as I had to do on the other one.

If its this fob, then it just prises apart. Had a couple in the past and thats how they come apart. You just need a thin, flat blade screwdrive between the 2 halves and prise it open. Maybe someone in the past has glued it? You can buy the cases on Ebay cheap enough if it has been glued and breaks. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rover-MG-...cles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4ab02b7dbc

Mine is similar to that StuyMac but the instructions are to "slide" them apart and NOT to prise - The only way I (and a friend of mine who is a mechanic) cn open it is to prise gently - ish!

I guess if it breaks, it breaks. Either way, its useless unopened with a dead battery. Use a bit more force, and if it breaks get a new case once you have changed the battery

Had one on the MGF, just stick a butter knife in the seam and crack it open. Cases are £1 on ebay. If you change the battery, you have to press the button 10 times to recode it to the ECU. http://www.remotekey.co.uk/cars/MG/mgf-mgtf/faq.asp
