Under The Volcano by Malcolm Lowry who was from New Brighton.

(Penguin Classics ISBN13:978-0-14-118225-4), It's set in Mexico, and is deemed 'A Faustian Masterpiece' by Anthony Burgess.

I think Lowry is a genius but I must admit I am finding it a struggle.
The descriptive passages are wonderful.

"Make room, make room" by Harry Harrison which was made into the film "Soylent Green" years ago about a future world of starving billions living on lentils, soya beans and - if they're lucky, the odd starving rat.
I like sci-fi and often read of things that eventually come true

Reading 'Whatever You Say I Am: The Life and Times of Eminem' at the mo.
However, I have reserved Roots by Alex Haley at the library. Currently watching the DVDs-half way through at the moment. So moving, I reckon the book will be fantastic. Anybody read it? Is it hard going?

I remember when it was shown on telly. Caused quite a rumpus at the time and interestingly its never been repeated as far as I'm aware.
I'm not sure I could cope with the book, as you say - heavy going

I was going to buy the book from Amazon but would rather 'risk' the price of library reservation -80p. The reviews on Amazon seem ok. I'll certainly try to 'stick it out'!

The Meg series by Steve Alten, no thinking necessary, Giant sharks eating lots of people, nothing more.
Predictable, shallow, comic book characters and ridiculous situations, kind of like a Hollywood action flick, enjoyable enough if your into 'big terrorizing monster' books and you dont take it too seriously.

Finally picked up 'Roots' the other day. (Somebody hired it the day I reserved it).
Anyway, it is easy to read. Very powerful but fully recommended to anybody who may have seen the series/ boxset. smile
