PRISON guards were forced to step in after the killer of Rhys Jones was attacked by a fellow inmate.
Croxteth gang member Sean Mercer, 18, was set upon in a communal area at Moorland prison in Doncaster by another prisoner
The attack took place shortly after his transfer to the young offenders wing of the closed prison.
Guards stepped in to break up the scuffle and took the teenager away.
Mercer was last month jailed for life, and ordered to serve at least 22 years after a Liverpool crown court jury convicted him of murdering 11-year-old Rhys in August 2007.
He will spend at least the next two years in a young offenders institute before being moved to an adult prison.
A Prison Service spokeswoman said:
"We can confirm an incident took place at HMP Moorland at 2.30pm on Saturday 27 December in which two prisoners assaulted each other.
"The incident lasted less than two minutes and was quickly resolved by the timely intervention of staff."
Mercer is thought to still be at the prison and being watched carefully despite reports he has been moved.
