Thats a decent price for a DTurbo engine. I wouldnt bother doing a HG at this time of year, its very cold, leave it to the pro's and it will all be done in a day and warrantied. I know its something that can be done but if you have never done it before, it can end up costing a lot more money in the time it takes you to get it done. A garage, 4 - 5 hours labour at least, as Stuy said the parts will come to around the £250 level, plus the skimming of at least £50, and on top of this a time allowance for any unforseen problems, and £500 all in a decent price. Not sure what the book time is on it, could be summit like 6 hours?? Personally, I wouldnt bother doing a HG replacement myself unless the car was either one I bought to do at my lesuire, I had done it before and was experienced with the engine I was doing it on, or I didnt mind losing the use of the car for weeks/potentially months lol.

I think it would work out cheaper to buy a new engine.

DTurbo's with decently low mileage and in decent nick are actually quite hard to come by nowadays. Remember the XUD engine was replaced by the DW10 in late 1999 or early 2000 iirc, so if all the engine needs is a HG replacement and skim, id choose that option as any other engine will be getting on for a minimum of 10 years old and the prices ive seen them fetching on eBay is stupid for the age of them.

garage phoned me 2day sayin that they have only just got the cylinder head off, and there id a problem. something has gon in the cylinders and done something else 2 the pistons (not very mechanically minded me as u can tell), so basically its ANOTHER engine jobbie. he hasnt got a price as of yet but i honestly cnt afford it if its over £500, which it probly will coz i will need the boost upping and fuelling etc coz they aint specialists. so bye bye pug 306 R.I.P

Actually, you will find the XUD engine is one of the most bullet proof on the roads... this one has had a lot of tuning done to it and quite probably been put under a lot of pressure, if not by Pete, then by the previous owner. There are plenty of people on pug306.net with XUD engines still going strong past 200,000 miles. My 306, with the TU petrol engine, had done 164,000 miles and still running as sweet as a dream when I eventually sold it a few months back, hardly shite, most petrol engined cars have been well scrapped by then!! And in 10 months of owning it, I only had the backbox replaced, never even bothered to get a new air filter!! (twas only sposed to be a temp car at first).
