Could be a dodgy connection in the clocks, dodgy temp sendor on the motor, or the wires in the middle I guess that narrows it down, doesnt it

i had a temp gauge problem and it turned out to be the temp sender switch, swapped it for another one and problems solved

Temperature sender units are common to become faulty, especially fard and vauxhall's Probably best to get it checked professionally, you could check out the sponsers page as there are several garages listed there. There is a easy way to test the operation of the gauge and the wiring. - Locate the temperature sender unit on your engine (Normally close to the thermostat area)
- Remove the wire from it (Typically there is just one wire)
- With the ignition switched on the gauge should read cold.
- Then put the wire to earth (Chassis or engine should do) and the gauge should go all of the way up to the maximum reading (Hot)
If this happens then the gauge is operating correctly and the wiring is fine so it has to be the temperature sender unit. The temperature sender units normally screw in easily, but beware as some have a tapered thread to allow for a good seal so DO NOT Overtighten it as you will break it Some newer vehicles have several temperature senders, only one of them sends the signal to the temperature gauge inside the vehicle, the other ones are to send signals to the E.C.U.

Sounds like there are 2 snags there mate, on the one side the guage is not reading so that is a worry but you know the needle/motor are fine as they move, i think u may have a short between the tacho/speedo and the temp, that would explain the needle moving as the revs/speed changes, can u be more specific on how the needle moves??? just to confirm if u have the short circuit??

That temp wire goes onto the engine block. There is a 'pin' sticking in the engine, and a little female spade clip, that's so feeble, it becomes unhooked. Get a pair of pliers and press it together so it goes back on the pin. It's prob. on the left of the engine (just follow some of the big pipes going to the radiator), and is next to the coolant temp sensor, it's part of the same wiring loom. The connector looks like this:
"C20 LET bang"
