I need to put a web site up for a group I'm in. Just a nice looking informative type site (no selling or anything so no shopping carts needed!) I've been looking at Godaddy, which seems like it might be ok, but, I've never done anything like this before, so any advice/help, please?

I use Create.net £6 per month for what you would need or £5 per month if paid annually. Has page builders so you don't need any experience with html etc. They offer 30 day trial, no card details required, try it and see if it's for you :-)

If you are after a free one try weebly.com
Can put easy stuff up and is pretty basic, however if you are putting in tables etc you would need something like dreamweaver fot html items.
Free to sign up, worth it just to see if it's what you are after.

My group has been using www.one.com for the past 5 years. you don't need any specialist knowledge. You can post photo's, use tables, hyperlinks etc. There are many page layouts you can use and it only costs us £25-00 per year. I had never done anything like it before and I managed it. Their very helpful tecchy people are on line 24 hours a day to help.

You probably want two things (1) a website (2) a domain. Google Sites are free and have no adverts (to see examples search for gsitesgallery). A domain will cost about £8 p.a.
The website that you create will have a very long address that you would not expect anyone to write down or remember. The domain address can be short and punchy and relevant to your site's topic. You link the domain to the website so that when someone types the domain they are taken straight to your site.
Weebly has a good name, though I don't use it myself. I believe that it is free if you create the site yourself. Some website developers use Weebly and charge for their work. Don't be put off by talk of using html code. It's not necessary these days unless you want to get sophisticated.
You could look at existing sites of local groups which are unlikely to have paid a lot of money for their site. Look at the foot of the page and see what system they have been created in (usually "Powered by.....") e.g. Google Sites, Weebly, etc. Then find out if that is a freebie.

Hi,all - and thanks for the help. I'm giving Weebly a go, and have spent the last few days playing with this. If all goes well, then I should be able to get the site up in a week - so fingers crossed!

Looks ok, only little advice I would say is if you can make links to pages clearer (not having to use the drop down menu) so you can see them on homepage would make the site more user friendly.
