Hello I'm trying to find out when the Central Hydraulic Tower in Birkenhead Docks was last used to open the lock gates. Does anyone know please? Sue

The engine house was still producing hydraulic power in 1983 but I suspect the accumulators in the tower went out of use long before that.
Unrelated but the new Alfred Dock hydraulic house was built in 1960 presumably ending the function of the Alfred Dock Hydraulic Tower.

I imagine the hydraulic accumulator was in use as long as the steam plant was. It would provide a quick start up which steam plant wouldn't manage.
By 1983 I'd expect the steam plant to have been long replaced by electricity which would render the accumulator redundant.
