Has anyone any knowledge about these please? Are they as good as they sound , any disadvantages,leakproof, will they last etc . Sound ideal for people with rheumaticky hands.

I have never heard of them but reading the reviews on Screwfix and Amazon people seem pleased at first but after a short while people seem very disillusioned .

Control unit would be two pushbuttons - one "Open" and one "Closed" that you hold down until the water goes on or off. You can have several control units if you want more than one, and you can separate controls and valve by as long a distance as you like. The 'water operated' ones use little pipes. Harder to route, and prone to puncture. I don't know how long these can be.

A stopcock key might be cheaper and easier.

Sadly key wouldnt fit in available space and angles but thanks Gibbo. I will look into thevalve you highlighted Ex thanks, and I dont know why I didnt think to look at online reviews Salmon, but you're right, it doesnt look ideal longer term . At least you know where you are with a tap . I guess well greased it shouldnt really be that stiff . Thanks all.

These things are advertised as a direct swop for a stop cock..i.e. in the same place..so would still be difficult to reach.

Can you get lever stop cocks rather than tap? Suitably placed isolation valve you turn with a screw driver maybe

I don't know if it's of interest, but I have ball valves so I can isolate washing machine and dishwasher. By experience, I've found the ones with plastic handles are pretty useless - the plastic degrades and falls apart and you have to use a spanner on them. So I've replaced them with ones with big steel handles. These work well, although if not used for a few years they stiffen up a bit, the handles don't fall apart and are big enough for you not to need much strength to move them. A quarter turn goes from fully off to fully on.

Accessibility may remain a problem of course; one doesn't find it quite so easy to grovel under the stairs or at the back of a cupboard at 80 as one does at 18, but at least when you get there you are likely to be able to operate the valve without much difficulty.

Given the cost of putting one of these Water Stop gadgets in place, might it be as cheap to simply have this type of easy to turn stopcock moved somewhere more accessible?
