Tesco King Street, ex-Mayalls site - 16th Aug 2012 12:45pm
The former Mayalls decorating shop in King St, which closed earlier this year, is being refurbished.
The rumors were that Tesco bought it to knock it down, possibly holding on to the site to prevent a competitor buying it.
However, over the past few months, workers have refurbished the roof, fitted new walls and a disabled ramp to the building. The car park has been dug up and relaid to a base coat surface, ready for a new top when work is completed.
As to the intentions of the new owners? Well, this week a statuary notice advertising the application for a liquor licence has appeared on the fencing. Application made in the name of Tesco, for sales of liquor to 23:00 at night.
That's bound to have an impact on the small traders around there and might even increase the petrol prices next door due to loss of trade.
