Train users facing delays as Network Rail announces project to replace tracks on West Kirby and New Brighton lines
WIRRAL rail commuters are facing travel disruption during a project to replace six miles of track on the West Kirby and New Brighton lines.
Network Rail says the new track will be less prone to defects, give passengers a "smoother, quieter ride" and improve train service reliability.
The West Kirby tracks will be replaced first, with work starting on Friday, October 7 and taking nine days. Work on the New Brighton line will start on Saturday, October 15 and finish on Sunday, October 23.
Rail replacement buses will operate between Birkenhead North and West Kirby/New Brighton stations.
Jo Kaye, Network Rail’s route director, said: “Merseyrail is one of the best performing train companies in the country and we aim to keep it at the top.
"The tracks on these two lines are life expired and need to be replaced otherwise the reliability of train services will be affected.”
Road surfaces on pedestrian and road crossings on the West Kirby line are being replaced as part of the project, meaning they will close for some or all of the time it takes to replace the tracks. Network Rail says diversions for vehicles will be put in place where necessary.
