First of all this is not a complaint but a warning to be very careful with paperwork and what you sign for.

Went to sign on today and was told that I had failed to turn up for an interview last week! so my benefits had been stopped pending an enquiry - you have to fill in a form explaining why you did not attend, what was said etc, if the staff there do not accept your reason then it goes to an independant person for decision.

The bottom line was the possibility of no money until next year.

Normally I sign on a tuesday morning but when I was last there two weeks ago (on the 30th Nov) I was given a letter (Dated 1st Dec ) which had the words "Please issue ONA" written in the corner, plus it was signed. This letter stated the fact that my signing time , today, had been changed til this afternoon, plus the usual threat that If I do not atteend then I could lose my benefits.

I was asked to sign for this letter, which I did so.

The problem arose today because the lady I usually see says that she issued me a letter detailling last weeks appointment instead and denies issuing me the letter about today? if so, who issued the letter I got??

I was interviewed by another member of staff and was able to prove to her satifaction that I was actively seeking work, hence always take proof that you are looking for work.

A simple mistake somewhere along the line but it came that close to totally wreaking xmas for me.

I would just like to add that I have no problem attending additionally interview as required, though I would much rather be back in work

When I last signed on, you're pretty much lumped with the ones that turn up on time and are actively looking for work, and the ones who have been on the dole since they left school. I found I was treated the same. I'd never sign on again, it's just grim having to go in there.

Hi David

You should always sign on, after all you pay NI and so you are entitled to it.

About a month ago , whilst I was waiting I listened to a 18 year old being asked about his depression. so that will be another one set up for life.

Its not grim there, treat the people how you like to be treated and you have no hassle, they are human like use.But totally useless place if you are actually looking for a job

all you have to do is go there once every two weeks and put your name on some paper, it takes all of 5mins,

I'm stuck on having to sign on every week and every single job they've allocated me for have been in stupid places (such as Shropshire, Glasgow, Birmingham And even London) Hell, Last Week they wanted me to get to The area next to john Lennon Airport from Upton WITHIN AN HOUR! and unfortunately all the public transport routes didn't even come close to a train station so i had to take one bus all the way to Wallasey Village Station, take the train to Moorfields and then swap to the Northern Line to get off at Liverpool South Park Way and walk about an hour getting to the right building. 3 hours later i failed and spent another several hours getting back to the Wirral. even the gateway training they put you on is completely unnecessary because all it is is how to write CV's, Letters and so on when all you is that lovely thing called common sense. Now that I've established myself with Connexions I've now got 4 Apprenticeships Lined up all with double the JSA as pay per week and within far more reasonable distance. All i really need to do now is wait for Christmas to come and go and hopefully i can finally make a start.

Not all the staff do that, sometimes I can go there sign the form and be out in about 2 minutes, other times they look up on the computer for jobs for you and print a load off even if you don't want that kind of job. I hate signing on because some of the staff treat you horribly.

wow sounds like if your unemployed you get treeted like a second class citizen.

Unemployed persons can sometimes be negativily tagged due to the people who abuse the system

We pay NI and its suppose to help us whilst we are looking for work.

I do say we because me and the most others can not survive on the allowance we get each fortnight

But what really annoys me are the people who have no real intention of working and instead go the path of medically , depression etc.

That makes my blood boil .

I actually tried to grass a person up once for working whilst he was signing on, after all he had just robbed my house and his mate put a knife to my throat outside the chippy, top of Carlton road. people actually worked passed into the chippy. . the DHSS response was that they could do nothing unless I supplied them with his NI number!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

welcome sarah smile yes what gets me is when they ask have you been working, love to know how many people say yes but shhh don't tell lol
Posted By: chris7777 Re: Job centre and signing on. - 1st Jan 2011 11:54pm
what gets me is that you are given a ''personal adviser''and that ''personal adviser'' is half my age! and they are going to tell ''me'' how to apply for a job, write a letter etc, etc.
i was doing all that before they were born!when there were jobs, it's an insult!! not that i am signing on but when i was----------
i said to one of them once 'if it was'nt for the likes of me you would be out of a job!'

they need to watch the news a bit more often and see how many are loosing their jobs, and how many are going after one job!!

I have been going to the job centre every week for the past 4 weeks for them to help me find a job. I look on the job centre website every day. I currently work 5 hours a week - which according to them is not enough. I hate going there, I will be glad when I go back to going every 2 weeks.

If you give up looking for work then whats the alternative? Vegetate at home watching Loose Women? There are plenty of Voluntary Organisations who are screaming out for peoples help - and employers do like to see people being pro-active.

why is it that you say your on the dole, everyone thinks your a lazy sod, tell that to the people at voxalls or people who go to work to find the company as gone bust, 1000 people for 1 job doesn't go, God help you if you lose your job and need money, no ones job is safe in this day n age, my granddad would go on about working all his life sorry granddad there was less people then the uk is overflowing now, k thats my rant over and thats I got to say about that.

Wellllllllllll, we all know who's taking your jobs eh?

This IS England.

paul i have to digree with you there...i have seen many volunteers come and go in all the years i have worked in my profession in the private sector of child education and only 1 was ever taken on as a staff member.

usually they come in and are given menial and the crappest jobs ever, with the promise of a full time job MAYBE at the end of it.....then full time members are taken on and then leave etc as they re qualified persons and volunteer is in limbo and feels begrudged...which i cannot blame them..

they put their life on hold in hope of a full time job and all they get at the end of it it a box of roses if they are lucky.....

it certainly dousn't sound fair the way the vols are treated. Ive found charities treat vols well, but theres always those that take the proverbial.

What hacks me off is that while you are volunteering the ones at the top are creaming good salaries off and treating the volunteers like shoit. My missus worked for nothing and wasn't treated very charitably, both learned a lesson from that one.
