Improvements will include replacing paving, updating drainage, new bus lay-bys and a new rail station canopy.
The work is being carried out by Merseytravel in partnership with the city council, Merseyrail and Network rail as part of a wider £73m project.
It will mean temporary road closures and diversions until the end of the year.
