I am trying to find the name of a road between Price Street and Brook Street.

It was there in the 50's and earlier.

The attached picture is an ordanace map picture from 1909.

I have marked the roads around it but i am interested in the road with the purple arrow and purple dots in the picture.

YELLOW: Camden Street, goes across price street to Brook Street.

RED: Eldon Street, faces the front doors of Trinity Church.

BLUE: Trinity Lane, located to the left of Trinity Church standing on Price Street.

GREEN: Trinity Terrace, located to the right of Trinity Church standing on Price street.

PURPLE: The street name i am interested in. It goes from Price Street to Brook Street(now called brook street east), but at least prior to the 50's was just Brook Street.

Any insight would be much appreciated as my mother is driving me mad trying to find the name.

Tony

I'd guess it could be Back Camden Street but German Terrace is a candidate?

The road you are looking for is between 80 and 82 Price Street but Price Street might have been renumbered at some time.

Thanks buddy, ill put the names to mother wink

I got the same numbers myself. Its strange that quite a few small roads are missing names on ordanance maps.
Even Trinity Terrace is missing it's name on this one.

She did have it in her head it has a short name, 3 or 4 letters but its been a long time laugh

She lived in Brook Street not far from the top end of this street until they moved in the 50's.

Thanks for the time and effort I'll ask her later and see if those names jog any memories.

Tony

Trinity Terrace might have been German Terrace which is why I question marked it before. The plan maps in Birkenhead central reference library will probably come up the name, they are ridiculously detailed.

German Terrace has mention as early as 1845 (Newspapers)

Various census and directories include German Terrace, Price St, consisting of 8 properties, there's mention of it in the 1916 directory, however, in 1938 it's recorded as Trinity Terrace. Very likely, like most German names or German sounding names they were changed after WW1.

@bert1 thats an interesting fact about about Trinity Terrace being previously named German Terrace.

It's not a far stretch of the imagination as to it being renamed after the war.

Trinity Terrace was to the right of the church in at least the late 40's and 50's she is sure of that.

Great info, thank you all.

@diggingdeeper, relating to wirral library.

She went to both the library and the archives at the town hall and both told her it was the top half of Camden Street that leads to Brook Street even though you can see the little road/terrace on the maps between the top of Eldon Street and the junction of Camden Street.

Both a good way to the left and right of it.

I never ask for details at the library, I just ask for the plan map index (which confuses them, they call it something else) and get a few sheets of the relevant area, some years have much higher resolutions than others available but the map scales are in the index.

I'm well overdue a visit to the library but tied up with a few other things at the moment.

Yes m8 thats it.

A guy in Bhead market is selling the pictures from what looks like Wirral Memories and some from here, at least the same ones are on there and here.

She bought that one, amongst others from him but obviously, due to the size and resolution just enlarging them to 6x4 makes them blocky.

If you use the streets option on Wirral Memories and select Price Street you can see more looking down the road from probably just before the railway bridge with Trinity Church just in the far left background of the pic.

Its amazing how some areas have has so few pictures taken before the area is lost forever.

I work in IT and regularly do work for Ian Boumphrey(Yesterdays Wirral Books) and he does not have any in his vast collection, that he knows off.

@bert1

In your blueprint pic is the front of the houses in German Terrace where i have put the Yellow line.

I.E. there are two rows of houses facing each other, both sides would have their front doors facing the yellow line?

If yes is the gap i am looking for the Green line and the Red line is the top half of Camden Street.

Can you see if the street with the Red line continues down across Price Street.

If it does and the Red line is Camden Street then in your blueprint the Green line which would be the one we are looking for looks like and entry behind German Terrace.

I guess if the Red line doesn't continue down across price street then its not Camden Street but the one we are looking for.

@bert1

Those last 2 pics you posted show much more of a clear layout and it looks like the gap i have been looking at could be the entry between German Terrace and the big plot belonging to 80 Price Street which stretches the whole length between Price Street and Brook Street.

I didn't notice when i posted further up that German Terrace was located in the dark patch down the middle of the plot.

The picture I posted was also put on wikiwirral by marty99fred a long time ago, WirralMemories pictures are limited to a maximum of 400 pixels wide, this version is 640 X 480 so slightly better resolution, they usually come out alright on glossy photo-paper at 6" x 4" with a decent scaling algorithm.

Yes, Tony,

Just an entry servicing the back of the terrace, having looked at numerous directories for Price St and Brook St, all the roads that junction with both roads are mentioned, no mention for the area/entry in question.

Ah, but I’ve noticed this before, a road with no people listed in the directory is often left out all together.

Can’t remember an example now but none of the “back” streets exist in the directories even though they are named on maps.

Iirc brook street odd numbers begin at 63 and the junctions are incomplete.

The 1938 Directory name the streets prior to 63 Brook St and also have listed, under "B" Back Streets
