Anyone had any dealings with testing and removal of an asbestos garage? Side wall sheets and corrugated roof all contain asbestos. The company who are selling the house for us quote £500 for testing (as to which type of asbestos it is) and a price for removal would also depend on what type it is. Any suggestions greatly appreciated

i told the seller to pay for my survey, otherwise I'd pull out of the sale (which they agreed).

A removal company will come out and will give you an estimate anyway. I found it was worth ringing round companies in yellow pages as there were large differences in the price.

If the thing unbolts, you might be able to remove it yourself. MWDA will take the waste free:

Take some comfort from the fact that asbestos cement panels, which is what the garage will be made from, is just about the least dangerous sort of asbestos product. You can dispose of it at Bidston; see the linked leaflet. The hire of a van will cost a lot less than any survey.

I'd read this leaflet that seems to cover exactly what you're after: http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/guidance/a14.pdf

Not quite the same thing, and itwas a few years ago, but we had a brick garage with one of those corrugated asbestos roofs and we needed it re-roofing . Byrne Roofing in Pensby dealt with it for us and assured me it would be disposed of in an appropriately safe manner.

All asbestos is carcinogenic and should be removed by specialist contractors only, this sounds like asbestos cement known in the trade as white asbestos this can be stripped by yourself but I would advise you to have it stripped by the pro's. Asbestos becomes dangerous when broken and becomes airborne, the dangers are in the breathing in of the fibres you can buy a disposalable face mask from most DIY shops but it must be PP3 rated for asbestos removal. You will also need 3 or 4 rolls of toughened plastic sheeting or heavy duty clear bags and a water pump with an asbestos suppresent in, to spray area as you strip to help keep any airborne fibres down. These garages sometimes have another form of more dangerous asbestos inside them acting as an insulator, we call it AIB board(asbestos insulation board)you can buy any removal equipment you might need from a company called SMH based in St helens
