play streets where introduced in the thirties, phased out in the seventies. the Wirral had lots of these play streets, tell us your story about yours.

The only one I remember, from the 1950's, was Back Menai St.

It wasn't just Back Menai Street, it was the actual street too. My Nan and Grandad lived there for 27 years x

Did they have a sign up saying it was a play street?
It wasn't too long ago that the folks in Arkle road and Mercer Road (the entrance of which is now paved over} used to put up barricades to stop vehicles using them as short cuts between Tollemache Road and Hoylake Road instead of going down to St James church to reach them.There are so many cars parked in side streets nowadays that you can't drive in if a vehicle was coming towards you. It's a lot more dangerous for kids to play out in their streets now.
