Before it was the ABC it was the Savoy and I think it was built on the site of the New Theatre Royal. Isn't it a snooker hall now?

Minors of the ABC...
And every Saturday all line up...
To see the films we like and shout aloud with glee..
We like to laugh and have our sing-song...
Such a happy crowd are wee..eeeee
We're all pals together...
We're Minors of the ABC.

If my memory serves me right - if they knew your birthday they would send you a birthday card from from Mickey Mouse. I can remember singing that song that Sneezy is talking about.

We used to get brought up onto the stage and everyone sang Happy Birthday to you !! smile

is this the cinema that is supposed to be haunted. I heard a story it was bombed in the war and people killed. An usherette has supposedly been seen

If it was bombed during the war it must have been repaired quick because I was taken there in 1944 to see the Wizard of Oze. First time taken to the pictures and sat on my dads knee. How's that for the memory of a 70 odd year old { the tin man scared the shit out of me} had night mares for ages after seeing the film

Not very often when I wanted a pint when playing snooker.

Here is some useless information, the lad that bought it and turned it in to a snooker hall told me when I was having a drink with him. To level off the floor it took 14 feet of concrete at the screen end and leveling back to the entrance.

Back of the ABC Cinema (Birkenhead) under demolition today. I've watched films in there and played snooker, such a shame.

Its still the Savoy for me.
Posted By: Norton Re: ABC Cinema - 3rd Jul 2019 3:57pm
Are they keeping the front intact? Bit of art deco etc.

Thinking about memories of the place, our school and others went to see special showings associated with our English Lit lessons. eg Richard III, Macbeth, The Lion in Winter I think.

Its complete demolition, construction of a mixed use three storey building (two retail units and offices) with a large-ish car park to rear.

https://planning.wirral.gov.uk/onli...WIRRA_DCAPR_100532&activeTab=summary

Previous demolition application was refused because of lack of clarity on what the land would be used for after demolition.

There is also a mention of an arson attack in 2017 whose details I can't recall.
